why are my biopsy results taking so long??

i had a suspected granulosa tumour on my ovary (rare type of tumour) they can only call it a "mass" when examining and mri. anyway they removed my whole ovary and fallopian tube, they also took a biopsy of my peritoneum (layer of fat covering the organs), flushed saline through my abdominal cavity and i had pelvic fluid created by the mass which i'm guessing they've analysed to look for cancer cells. it's been almost 3 weeks now and they said it should be no longer than 10 days so i'm getting a bit anxious. i was wondering maybe it's taking so long because they're was a lot to analyse?? maybe it's because it's a rare type of ovarian cancer they're looking for? idk just getting super impatient and i feel like my life's kind of on hold. anyone else relate?

  • Hello cara123461 and a warm welcome to our forum,

I think as they have told you that you would get your results back within 10 days and it has now been almost 3 weeks, you could perhaps give them a call and ask whether they can explain whether there have been any delays or whether they could tell you more as to when you can expect to get your results back. This will give you a bit of an update as to what is going on.

It must be such a stressful time for you as you are waiting for these important results and it's normal to feel like your life has been put on hold. I am sure many of our members will be able to relate to your situation and I hope that they will be along shortly to share their story with you.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. There are some useful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • I'm sorry you're going through this.

My brain is doing the same thing with my own biopsy results, I was told 2 weeks at the most and I'm on day 10. I just keep thinking because my type of lesion is rare, like yours, that it must be taking so long because they are having colleagues look at it to discuss etc etc.

I don't have any advice outside of just letting you know you aren't alone and that I think catastrophizing things is normal given the circumstance, but it may be worthwhile to challenge any potential cognitive distortions so we can stay in reality and deal with things as they come

You could be right, maybe that is what you have and maybe that is why it's taking longer, but maybe not.  Can you call to check in on things?

  • hi sorry it's taken me a while to reply,

i found out why it's taking so long. basically i called up a week ago and they said the results weren't ready (i'm guessing that was the asking for a second opinion aspect) so i called up yesterday again and apparently my consultant's on holiday leave that's why i was given a consultation appointment almost a month after my surgery so apparently i'll find out in that consultation appointment which is next thursday. don't really know how to feel to be honest. bit annoyed no one told me he reason i hadn't received results was because my consultant had gone on holiday, i was sort of just left to go out of my mind with worry lol anyway i don't know if having a face to face appointment is good or bad? guess i'll just have to wait for the 3rd and try not to worry

how are you doing? have you received your results or still waiting?

  • Hi

You're not alone in the waiting. I had a lumpectomy 15 days ago and am also waiting for the results. I called up this week to be told they weren't back yet and all bar one of the consultants Te on holiday this week as it's half term. I never thought there would be so much waiting in this journey.

Wishing you all the best x
