Worried mum, could it be lymphoma or ALL?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and could advise or share outcome?

we took my 2 year old daughter to the doctors a few weeks ago as she had a large swollen lymph node on her neck that had been there for months and was getting bigger, that and the fact she is always tired and white pale looking the doctor booked her in for blood tests and an ultrasound scan straight away.

we had her first set of blood results back and we have been in pure panick ever since. Her bloods came back that she had mild lymphocytosis, and when googling I read that it can be normal however if it persists can be an early sign of lymphoma or ALL... the doctors ordered another set of bloods to be taken 3 weeks later to see if it had gone and was just due to a current infection. The second set of results came back and they were the same, lymphocytosis still present and no improvement. The GP immediately referred her to a pediatric consultant but we are yet to hear from them regarding an appointment or what happens next. She had her ultrasound scan yesterday on her neck which confirmed she had multiple enlarged lymph nodes on her neck.

I am so worried I can hardly function! She's gone right off her food, hardly wants to drink, generally not herself.

any advice appreciated!

  • I'm in a similar situation with my 3 year old daughter.
She woke up quite poorly 4 weeks ago, very sleepy, sick and high temp. 111 told us to go to a&e so we did and they took bloods which showed a very elevated WBC of 30,000 and low haemoglobin. They gave us antibiotics as they thought she had an infection and to repeat bloods in 3 weeks.

in the mean time I noticed she has quite a few lumps on the left side of her neck and behind her right ear. One of them on her neck feels quite big.

took her back to Gp cause I'm so worried about the lumps like you I can't function for thinking the worst. The GP won't refer her for a scan so I've booked a private scan for this Wednesday cause I can't go on like this.

What did they say about the englared glands in your daughters neck? What was raised on her bloods was it the Lymphocytes? My daughters was very high neutrophils and low lymphocytes

Thinking of you and here if you'd like to chat I know how horrible this worry is xx

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply and I'm so sorry you're going through this. I understand how you feel, I feel like I cannot even function let alone eat or anything else!! Such a worry!

It was her lymphocytes that we're raised in her bloods and significantly so! And then got even higher with her second set of bloods. She had a scan on her neck and they confirmed they were enlarged lymph nodes and by themselves wouldnt be worrying but paired with the bloods they need further investigation. We were still awaiting het referral to peads.

I was told after just one blood test there's not much they can do, but as soon as you have the repeat in 2-3 weeks, if that is still not right, they will then look into it more and refer for scans etc.

We have actually just gotten home from the hospital. This morning she started shaking and projectile vomiting, she's refused food and drink for the last 3 days and hadn't urinated in 16 hours, wasn't interested in playing and had been extremely sleepy.

We saw a consultant who has just sent us home with antibiotics and said she's probably got a viral infection, I'm so angry and confused as she's been unwell for weeks and weeks and my instincts are telling me it's more than just a viral infection! They said at the minute her lymph count isn't high enough for them to worry right now, however they want to keep an eye on her and do her bloods again in 3 weeks to check they're coming down!

i just feel so lost and like no ones listening to me!

  • So sorry you are feeling like this and going through it.

I feel the same, I've hardly been eating for weeks, I'm not interested in doing anything it's horrible.

That's how my daughter was a few weeks ago, shaky, temp of 40, projectile sick, seemed like she wasn't on this planet just wanted to sleep and we had the same outcome - antibiotics for a "viral" infection!

I know exactly how you feel about not feeling listened to, I literally just want to scream at the Dr's! We know our child more than anyone and know when something isn't right!
