Urgent 2 week referral

So I have been having regular bloods taken for blood sugars and liver function and last week my GP called me in urgently as my bloods indicate iron deficiency anemia, most probably from heavy bleeding.  Thing is, I'm not bleeding from anywhere that I have noticed.

GP has referred me as suspected lower GI cancer last Wednesday and today I got a call from the hospital booking line to say they have booked a call in with the consultant for next Wednesday.

What I'm worried about is my iron reserves, as my ferritin level was 7 & I've not been prescribed any iron supplements.

Are telephone appointments normal?  What will happen on the call?  Should I be worried about such a low ferritin level?

  • Hello Clw13

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some abnormal blood test results. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things but it's good to know that you already have an appointment with the Consultant arranged.

As your appointment is only a few days away try not to worry too much about iron supplements. The important thing is that the team is able to establish what is causing your low levels in the first place and then they will be able to discuss the best way forwards regarding treatment and restoring those iron stores to a good level.

If you want to chat your concerns through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I hope that the team is able to give you some reassurance on Wednesday. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi, did you hear back at all? I have just had my results back from a blood test and I've iron deficiency anemia but no other symptoms apart from feeling tired really.

  • Hi

I ended up going in to hospital to have a colonoscopy and an endoscopy (on the same day - joy! Haha).  They didn't find a bleed, just pockets in my bowel, diverticular disease which is treatable with diet and antibiotics when flares up.  They did take a biopsy from the endoscopy and said nothing sinister.  Still waiting on results from that.

I have started on iron tablets and have an appointment to have my bloods taken in 2 weeks time to see how my iron and hemoglobin levels are.

Also since then I've had a colposcopy and they have found some pre cancerous cells on my cervix.  They took a biopsy on Friday, so should have results back in about 4 weeks.

It feels like it's never ending, but I'm sure once you have some iron tablets and levels increase, you will start to feel better.  I've definitely got more energy than before and managing to walk to work a few days a week now.

Hope all goes well with you.

  • Thank you so much for replying, glad to hear all is ok with you and fingers crossed for you over your results! I see my doctor tomorrow about wanting to refer me for a colonoscopy, I don't have any other symptoms apart from the fatigue and constant going the toilet but it's not loose or has red in it. I have the worst health anxiety in the world and can't cope with the not knowing. Did you have any symptoms regarding the pre cancerous cells? X
