Enlarged nodes, awaiting a ultra sound appointment

Hi all. Hope you're keeping well. Ive found this forum when looking up my symptoms and trying to make sense of them. Before Xmas I noticed swollen lymph nodes under both armpits, they look like nodules, they stick out under the skin. Then on Xmas day I noticed a huge swollen lymph node in the crease of my elbow... I freaked but thought.. I would wait and see if I was coming down with something. I never even got a cold. Fast forward to last week, I saw a senior nurse practitioner .She detected all the swollen lymph nodes, took my bloods and said she was going to send me for an ultra scan, treating me as an urgent referral. It's been 6 days and I haven't yet got anything from the hospital so waiting to be seen for my ultra sound. I worry so much that this could be lymphoma. I don't want to be fobbed off so was glad that the nurse took it so seriously. I don't have night sweats, I'm more tired than usual. I wonder why nobody called me to discuss blood results. Are they waiting to see the results of the ultra sound? Xx

  • Hi Gosia and welcome to the community.

I'm sorry for the worry this is causing you at the moment but as you say, it's good the nurse took your concerns seriously and the necessary tests are being carried out to find out the cause.

Hopefully the results from both your ultrasound and blood tests will bring good news but our members know how challenging this time can be so I'm sure some of them will be along soon to offer you their support and advice.

Fingers crossed you won't have to wait too much longer for your ultrasound and that this information we have about urgent referrals will help put your mind at ease.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Gosia,

I just wanted to hop on and say I know exactly how you feel. I have quite a few large swollen hard lymph nodes as well as 2 large lumps in my neck and I'm trying so hard not to assume the worst but it's very hard not to worry.

The first showed up around September and after it had been there a month I went to the doctor who sent me for bloods which came back normal - I regards to you not hearing about your bloods I'd advise just ringing your doctors I know that my doctors generally don't ring if they come back normal so I had to ring to find out. Even if they don't have the results yet they'll at least be able to tell you what's happening with them and chase it up for you.

Between then and now multiple more have popped up included these 2 large lumps at the base of my neck either side. I went back early Feb and my doctor sraight away referred me for an ultrasound.

Other than the lumps I haven't felt any symptoms other than being really tired all the time but I work shift work including nights so that's not anything unusual or to be unexpected really haha!

I suffer with anxiety so have been going out of my mind with worry because we all know what Google says about things like this! I've been trying to keep myself busy to distract myself and that's the best advice I can give regarding worrying (not v helpful I know :/).

One thing I will say is I'd highly advise ringing the department if you still haven't had an appointment date sent out. I waited 2 weeks (which is how long my doctor said it would take for me to get an appointment letter) and when I hadn't heard anything I rang the hospital switchboard and asked to be put through. The woman on the phone was super helpful and able to get me booked in over the phone for the 3rd March (much sooner than the 6-8 weeks she said it normally takes). Would definitely recommend ringing if you haven't been sent an appointment as they might be able to do the same for you!

Feel free to reach out to talk any time as I know how hard it can be at times!

  • Hello Lj1608

thank you for replying to my post. My ultra sound is booked for 9th of March. The lymph nodes in my armpits are still enlarged. Blood work was fine. I am very worried there are days when I don't obsess so much about what it could be but I l do have very dark moments sometimes. I've noticed shortness of breath and a cough that comes and goes. My voice will often go hoarse without a good reason. I worry that I have some large nodes in my chest. Good luck for your appointment on the 3rd. What tests will you have? Please, let me know how it went. I hope that it will turn out to be some weird viral infection we've not heard of or something else benign. Sending big hugs your way xx

  • Hi Gosia,

That's great that you have an appointment booked and at least know a date of when you'll hopefully get some answers!

I know exactly how you feel about some days being easier than others, it's so hard not to worry but I know from reading on here and just other people's stories that 9 times out of 10 these things aren't actually anything serious! I find a few things that help me not to worry is to try and not feel the lumps as much (easier said than done I know) and also talking about it on here has really helped. Speaking about how you feel can always help take the weight of it a bit but I know sometimes it's hard talking to family and friends as you don't want to worry them either so never hesitate to just drop me a message about anything!

Fingers crossed the next week flys by and you get good news at your scan!! My appointment on the 3rd is just for an ultrasound and then they'll see from there I think. Do let me know how you get on and in the meantime feel free to message me

  • Hi LJ

How did you get on with your scan appointment last week? Will you have to wait long for your results? Gosia

  • Hi Gosia,

I didn't really get told much at the scan other than that he could see a lot of very large lymph nodes and that the swelling either side of my neck that the doctor wasn't sure of was my lymph nodes too. He said my thyroid and salivary glands looked fine and then asked a few questions such as how long I've had the swollen nodes, if I've been ill etc. Then said he'd send a report to my doctor, he didn't say when I'd get the results but I think it should be within 7 days based off of the info on my initial appointment letter.

Hope your scan goes well, do let me know how you get on!

  • Hi LJ

I hope that you won't have to wait too long before you hear from your GP again. Did they advise what is likely to be the next step? Weds can't come soon enough. It's been a month since I saw anyone about my lymph nodes. The one under my armpit feels like it's really hard. Diagnostics takes so long.. It's really unnerving. X

  • All he said was that a report would be sent to my GP who would decide and discuss the next steps with me. My thinking is they can't have found anything extremely concerning or surely they'd of been in touch by now (that's what I'm hoping and telling myself anyway haha) It really is very unnerving and worrying waiting for tests and results, best thing I've found for it is keeping busy and distracted, but not long left for you to wait now! Fingers crossed, I'll be thinking of you

  • Just wanted to wish you all the best for your scan today! Fingers crossed its positive news xx

  • Hi,

I've had an ultrasound today on enlarged lymph nodes on my neck, the person doing the scan after said he needs to get someone to look at them as 'they aren't normal' anyone had this
