Bowel and stomach rumbling

Hi, recently, over the last 2.5 months I've been having constant stomach and bowel noises, it started when I had a very stressful event happen to me, and has been constant since then. It happens mainly in the mornings, and night time, but it is still there during the day. I have had mild diarrhea for about the last month now. I done a stool test, which came back negative, but the stool that I took the sample from just happened to be the only solid one I've had in the last month, which I was wondering if that could've changed the outcome of the test? I'm seeing the doctor once more next week, and I'd like to ask for a colonoscopy and potentially a gastroscopy to rule out anything sinister, I'm 21 and not in bad health. I think this has definitely been the most stressful perioid of my life, which I think may be either the cause, or making things worse. I was wondering if anyone has had anything similar to this happen to them, or if anyone is going through this right now?

  • At 21, the odds are very strongly against your having bowel cancer, especially with a negative FIT test. I read somewhere that there is something like a 1% chance of cancer with a negative FIT and given your age, the odds in your case are probably significantly lower again.

Last summer, at the age of 40, I had rectal bleeding, some weight loss, occasional loose stools (admittedly only once a week or so) and trapped wind. The consultant said that if my mother came in with those symptoms, he would be considering bowel cancer, but at my age, it was possible, but highly unlikely and I would have to be "the unluckiest person in the world" for that to be the explanation. You are much younger than me and it sounds like you have no bleeding or weight loss, so the odds are probably even lower in your case.

You're doing the right thing by seeing the doctor, but personally, I'd wait and see if they say a colonoscopy is necessary. It may not be. I'd say stress could well account for your symptoms or IBS or probably a whole load of other things.

  • I'm sorry to hear that you went through that, I'm hoping you're in good health now though! The bleeding has stopped, I did have a scare as I seen what I thought was blood, but upon closer inspection, was just a red fiberous string of something I had eaten!

I've been monitoring my weight, and from what I can tell, I've been staying around the same weight, although I have been eating less, due to slight nasuea and sickness, I think those are due to the stress however!

From what I can tell from your message you seem to be doing a lot better now (I hope) As you seem like a nice person! Thank you for the response!

  • I'm not sure if anyone will see this, but I've been to multiple different doctors about this now, and I've been given some form of medication, anti-spasmodics, which after 2 days, aren't working, I might have to try them longer, which I certainly will, I wish I would be referred for more serious tests, but given my age, it's "impossible" I have cancer apparently. I wish I don't but the longer these symptoms persist, the more it convinces me I do

  • Sorry to hear you still haven't had any answers. Waiting is stressful and of course, stress can contribute to bowel problems, so that could be a factor too.

If a number of doctors are convinced it's not cancer, that's definitely reassuring.

  • It really is, I'm quite relaxed in the thought of it isn't cancer, I feel like if it was, 6 months of it being untreated would be hell, and I'd be a lot worse than I am now!

I'm going to keep updating this thread with medications, and seeing what works/doesn't for me, as I want anyone who has this problem to have it fixed as soon as possible, it's been the worst time of my life, both mentally and physically and I couldn't wish it on anyone, so hopefully a little documentation from me can help them!

  • Hi did you have endoscopy and colonoscopy? And if so how are you now   xx
