Aching leg

Hello, I started getting aches in my left leg in April, it would change position, sometimes it would be in the front of my thigh, sometimes the back, sometimes the buttock, calf or foot. This then changed to my right leg and would continuously switch legs.

I went to my gp numerous times, too many to remember! In one appointment a lump was found on my neck and I had an ultrasound of it with suspected lymphoma. I was referred to ENT who wanted a second look at this lump so they arranged another ultrasound and some bloods to look for markers, bloods came back normal and on the ultrasound it was deemed to be a reactive lymph node, I was discharged from ENT.

So back to the gp I went! I told the gp that the ache/pains feel like they are in my bones, so he ran some more blood tests this time a bone profile and he wanted to check if I had any deficiencies (this was now June). My bone profile came back normal apart from low calcium and my vitamin D came back almost none existent at just 5. My gp explained vitamin d deficiency can cause bone and muscle pains. I was put on a loading dose of vitamin D and around September/October the pains completly went away.

However, the pain returned in January, this time it has only been in my right leg (mainly the back of my thigh by the buttocks or just above the front of my knee). The pain is the exact same pain and will sometimes radiate down to my calve or foot if I am sitting on my thigh. The majority of the time I feel like the pain is coming from my bones! I am terrified it is bone cancer. It seems to get better if I am sat in a certain position and isn't as intense at night as it is during the day.

I am also 33 weeks pregnant so will be asking if I need to up my vitamin D intake as it is Winter and as I live in the UK we hardly get any sun.

I have booked an appointment with my gp for 21st Feb.

  • Hello Shephard,

You've taken the right action in booking an appointment with your GP for the 21st of February. This will be a good opportunity to ask whether you need to up your Vitamin D intake. Being pregnant can also affect your muscles and trigger all sorts of pains so hopefully these symptoms will ease once you've had the baby. Talk to your GP about your fears that it might be bone cancer so that your doctor can reassure you about this.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck with the last few weeks!

I hope that your doctor's appointment goes well and that you will get the reassurance you need about this and that you no longer get those aches in your leg.

    Best wishes,
