PET Results - appointment pushed back

Hi all, I was due to meet my consultant yesterday to get my PET /CT scan results but got a phone call last Friday pushing the appointment back until the end of the month - the reason for this was that I was also having an ultrasound to check on how I was healing after surgery and they'd not had chance to book it in. When they called I queried the appointment being pushed back and the coordinator said results are always checked in the background and she's sure they would act sooner on anything urgent.

I had the ultrasound on Tuesday this week and the PET / CT scan a week and a half ago. I was told the results would be back with the consultant within 48 hours for the PET / CT and 24 hours for the ultrasound.

The new date is 3 and a half weeks since the PET Scan which feels like an incredibly long time. Does anyone know if there is any definitive timeframes for informing people of results if they're bad?

Trying to distract myself but it's hard. thank you.

  • Hello anxcl,

The usual timeframe to get results from a PET scan and a CT scan is 1 to 2 weeks. You can read more about this on this page about the PET scan and on our information page about the CT scan

It's frustrating that your appointment was pushed back and 3 and a half weeks can feel like a really long time when waiting for important results. Perhaps you could try and ring them to see whether they would be willing to give you the results sooner as these normally take 1-2 weeks to come through but if they are unable to do so, unfortunately all you can do at the moment is wait which is no easy thing as many of our members will know only too well. It's really hard as you say to distract yourself while waiting but try to keep away from the temptation to look anything up online which is an easy thing to do when dealing with so much uncertainty.

I hope you get some clarity on all this very soon and that you will hear from others on this forum who have been in a similar situation before and that they will come and share their experience with you.

Everything crossed for you for good results!

    Best wishes,
