Large Ovarian mass found - being sent for MRI. Terrified.

Hi everyone..

I am 29 and have been expericing abdominal pain for quite some time.
I was eventually sent for a ultrasound and a referral to gynea followed. They told me that I have a large 15x8 mass on my ovary. They have said that it has cystic qualities. Is this another term for an ovarian cyst??
Ive been booked in for an MRI to explore whether it may be malignant..
i am terrified I have ovarian cancer, as I do present with some of the symptoms.

my friend had a large cyst (11cm) and only ever an ultrasound and they said straight away they were not concerned.
why am I being sent for a MRI? Do they think I have cancer?
I am awaiting tumour marker blood test results.
I am so scared, I've got a toddler. I don't want to leave her.. words cannot describe how scared I am.

  • Hello Icecream123

I'm sorry to hear that you've been dealing with some ongoing health problems and that your recent ultrasound showed that you have a mass on your ovary. it's understandable that you're feeling anxious and worried about what this may be.

An MRI is a scan that's used to create clearer and more detailed images than can be seen on some other scans. Hopefully the MRI will give the specialists the information they need to give you a clear diagnosis about this mass that's been found.

We know that for many people waiting for tests, results and appointments can be a difficult period of time. It's natural to feel scared as the unknown can be a scary prospect to face. Many people find it can help to talk through their concerns with someone and I wonder if you might find it beneficial to have a chat with one of our nurses? I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice and support that they can to help you through this time. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
