    Hi Lady_penelope,

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling so anxious.

It unusual for breast pain to accompany breast cancer, so here's hoping that there is a simple answer to your problems. Not all breast cancers are cancerous.  Many people have benign cysts, fibrous or hormonal changes.

You will find that the staff at the breast clinics are usually very understanding and helpful. You will speak to your consultant about your symptoms, then have an examination of your breasts. You will probably then have a mammogram, an ultrasound and, possibly a biopsy.  If you need a biopsy a tiny amount of tissue will be removed under local anaesthetic and sent for examination. It normally takes 1-2 weeks to get these results back and these will confirm whether or not there is any cancer present. You will be brought back to get your results and, if there is any cancer present, you will discuss with the consultant any surgery or treatment needed.

I don't know what age you are, but you are unlikely to have a mammogram if under 40, as younger breasts tend to be more dense and don't show up well on mammogram. All of the extra tests are routine and most of us have them, so try not to panic. Only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic gets a cancer diagnosis, so the chances of getting a more favourable diagnosis are still pretty high.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Just had mammogram and now waiting on ultrasound scan I'm a mess have this sense of doom in my belly crying anxious scared also felt like I was rushed through wasn't able to speak etc

  • Hi, I have been to breast clinics several times, thankfully everything has been fine each time.

    What to expect.....

it's a brilliant service, a bit like a one stop shop.

I have always had an ultrasound examination first, followed by a mammogram, and as there wasn't anything found each time, I went straight into see the consultant where they performed a breast exaimination. If biopsies are required they should do them the same day.

Please try not to get yourself stressed out, I understand how worrying it is for you but the majority of referrals prove to not be cancer.

    Hope it goes well xx

  • I see doctor first who asked questions done a check of breasts  then he said to have both mammogram.n ultrasound I've had mammogram now waiting on ultrasound and I feeling very scared at this moment in time

  • It's normal to be anxious and scared, I'm sure you'll be fine. Tell the staff if you're not ok x
