Waiting for mole to be cut out, scared I have melanoma

Hello,

I'm realy, realy stressed. I noticed that my mole has changed - has different colours and it has like a little bump in the middle. I call GP, doctor gave me 2WW - within one week I get the appointment with the dermatologist - which was yesterday.

He looked at the mole, he said it's concerning and than he told me I need to wait 4-6 weeks for another appointment to be able to cut out the mole and send it to biopsy. Is that normal? I'm really scared that I have melanoma.. And 6 weeks seems wayyyy to long to wait. Shall I call my GP and try to push it? Is it normal to wait that long? :( I'm really scared and anxious :(

  • Hi there - sorry to hear you are feeling so anxious. I went through the same pathway last year, removal appointment was a 5 week wait after seeing dermatologist - removal got cancelled on the day of due to them having covid and I eventually got it done another 2 weeks after that. Then results back log is huge apparently, have now been waiting 7 weeks although that could be different all over the country I guess. I dont think your GP will be able to push things along but you could ask the hospital to put you on a cancellation list (I was on one when my initial excision got cancelled). Its horrible all the waiting

  • Thank you for the answer. So it is like this - long wait.

I called my GP today, I will have phone call with my GP doctor next week. Maybe he will be able to write down, that this mole has to be removed as soon as possible. I thought that if I had referral to dermatologist it means - the mole has to go. Whole this waiting time is awful :(

  • Hello how long did the appointment roughly take for you to get? Thankyou and hope results were well
