Refused ultrasound as they want to wait&watch. Anyone else?

Hi, a few weeks ago I noticed swelling in both sides of my thyroid and a small movable lump on the left side. I have had bloods all come back clear and was referred for an ultrasound scan. However, I've had a phone call from the doctors to say the ultrasound consultant has refused to give me a scan as my bloods are clear and wants to wait and watch? Has anyone experienced this before? Surely they have a duty of care to provide an ultrasound I have a lump and swelling. I'm so anxious and stressed. Would private be the best route to go down? Thanks

  • Hi Ke-lo,

I'm sorry to hear that the consultant made that decision, I can imagine this must be frustrating and confusing. I'm not sure if you have been given any next steps - for example being asked to return to the doctor if nothing has changed in a certain period of time.

If not, or if you feel uncomfortable with waiting, then the best thing would be to talk things through with your doctor, or to get a second opinion. You can discuss the private option with your doctor too if you would like to - if the doctor is happy to refer you then this could be one option if it would help you to feel more comfortable.

    Wishing you all the best,
