Breast clinic screening

Hi,

I have found a lump in my breast which my GP felt and confirmed was around 4-5cm. Gp done an urgent referral for a mammogram.

Can someone give me an idea on how long the wait time is for this in the west of Scotland. The gp said 7-10 days for an appt?

Also I'm 28, worried I won't be taken seriously when I attend the clinic for a mammogram due to my age?

  • Hi [@Scot21]‍ sorry to read your in this position.

When you are referred and go to the clinic it's very likely you will see the consultant first and then potentially have a series of tests so maybe an ultrasound before a full mammogram.

They are specialists and see so many different aged people everyday. They will know as soon as they feel what tests will be best for you.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you for replying, hopefully I hear back about an appointment.

Feeling so anxious and worried, I'm hoping and praying it's just a cyst that needs drained. Never had anything like this before x

  • Completely understand. I have my appointment next week and although its not that far away I'm a mess. The waiting and not knowing is so hard. It causes me to think the absolute worst. I keep crying and even though the doctor didn't seem concerned I am still going over the what ifs.

The chances of it being a cyst or something not serious is so much more likely though, but I appriciate me saying that doesn't help you at the moment! X

  • Not long until you have some answers and hopefully you can put this worry behind you, are you in the same position as me at the moment?

It really is so worrying, good luck for your app next week xx

  • Hi Scot21,

I am in the same position as you. I saw a GP Thursday and received a call this morning to book an appointment for 10th March. The primary reason for me posting is to suggest that when you get your appointment you ask (or if via letter call to ask) to be added to the cancellations list. I was advised to do this by someone on this forum and I did so today. Remarkably, they called me a couple of hours later to book me in for a cancellation that popped up tomorrow!

    Best of luck xx

  • West of Scotland here, im 44 and I saw GP 24th Jan, appointment is 10th Feb x

  • I can relate to everything you said! I'm constantly close to tears! Work was so hard today!

It's a huge amount of worry, I've confided in a couple of friend ehich has really helped, and heard so many postive outcome stories. But as you'll well know our minds go to the what ifs

    Right there with you!

  • Hi,

Please don't worry,I was called back after a mammogram and got an appointment in Glasgow in November. ..I was very worried too.The staff are wonderful, very kind and friendly and always make sure you are at your ease

Thet will certainly take you seriously and and they do their best to make you feel comfortable .There might not be a problem, but better to get it checked out,and I'm sure the staff will be delighted if there isn't. If there is you will have everything explained to you, and told and prepared for what comes next.

    Good luck!

  • Hi I'm in Lanarkshire and waited 5 weeks for my appointment but I think that was due to it possibly not being marked as urgent as my GP thought it would be nothing. I had a dimple which she couldn't see and when examined she couldn't feel anything.

I ended up getting seen at Forth Valley as they are taking referrals from Lanarkshire when they have space. The staff at the clinic were very good and put me at ease. They definitely will take you seriously. Take care and all the best.
