Newbie with Thyroid Nodules.. Really scared.

Hello all, last week I had an ultrasound which revealed two TR 4 Nodules suspicious for malignancy. One is in my lower right lobe 1.8cm x 1.4 cm and the other in my left isthmus 1.4cm x 1.1cm. I am having the big one biopsied tomorrow. My symptoms were for two weeks I felt a lump in my throat when I swallowed and sometimes would just feel like a pill was stuck in my lower left side of throat. For the last week I notice the lump more when I swallow and as of the last day or so it feels like someone is pressing a finger in my trachea or just alot of pressure there like someone is strangling me. Could this be related to my nodules or could there be more going on? I don't have any visible or palpable lumps on the neck. Should I ask for ct scan or go to an ENT to see if something else is there? Anyone else have these types of symptoms with their nodules? Any replies are greatly appreciated. Sabrina

  • Hi. Just calling in to try and offer some reassurance. I had thyroid cancer just over two years ago and it really isn't what you might be imagining when you hear the word "cancer." The most common forms of thyroid cancer have a near 100% survival rate in the younger age group (where "younger" means under about 50) and they don't usually use chemotherapy or radiotherapy or anything. It's generally just a case of removing your thyroid. This does mean you have to be on medication for life afterwards and some people have problems with getting the dose right and so on, but most don't. I felt no different at any point.

I also had radioiodine treatment afterwards but that is just annoying. It doesn't hurt or make you feel sick or anything. You just have to be isolated because you are radioactive and you might not need that. It depends on your risk of reccurance.

You could mention your symptoms at the biopsy, I guess.

  • Hi,

I am in a similar position during the last six years.

Same feeling, pressure on my left side or sometimes all over my neck, like I can't swallow. Sometimes worse, sometimes less.

I have a nodule on left side around 10 mm x 5 mm , level 4. They told me to keep to one radiologist to check to avoid different measurements and opinions.

So, my dr said: don't do anything, biopsy is not always accurate and can have wrong direction, if the nodule doesn't grow quickly or at all  during years and keeps same, don't touch and no needles.

And I feel I can trust him.

  • Hi There - I have had a hourse voice for almost two months now and a feeling likeI have something stuck in the back of my throat for about 5 - 6 weeks. Ive been for blood tests, x-ray of my chest, consult with an ENT, a CT scan of my neck and chest and now Ive been told I need to wait for a MDT meeting ) a meeting bewteen various practitioners) - when I googled it it says this is to treat cancer - I cannot get anyone to say I have cancer or give me any diagnosis - I know how you are feeling - All I can say is I have a candle burning for me you and all the others that are now terrified and I do hopethat your biopsy goes well. Take care

  • Hi Jodib, thanks for your reply. I am so sorry you have been waiting for so long. The waiting without knowing is really the hardest part. I hope you get a call very soon. I am reassured by everything I read that even if it is cancer it is typically very slow growing. Maybe they know this? I would think if it was anything particularly aggressive they would have prioritized their meeting. What is the old saying no news is good news? maybe that is the case with yours. I sure hope so. Thanks for the well wishes, sending positivity and prayers your way. Sabrina

  • Hi, thank you for your response. I am sorry you are dealing with those symptoms. They can be maddening. My anxiety is through the roof and so I wonder how much is due to my anxiety and how much is due to my physical health. I think the management of your nodule at this point is right considering how small size it is. I have also read they cant get a good sample of the small ones anyway. Monitoring for growth is reasonable and I hope yours doesn't ever grow. As far as your symptoms of pressure and swallowing, it seems your nodule is so small I wonder if it would even cause that? Have you had any other tests or scans done to see if it may be anything else causing it? I am thinking about asking for other tests for me too. Take care, Sabrina

  • Hi Margaret Mary,

Thanks for your response, it is so reassuring to know you had a very positive outcome. Do you mind me asking a couple of questions? Did you have a total thyroidectomy? How many nodules did you have and how big was your biggest nodule at the time? I worried about the RAI pill, so glad to know you did not have a problem with that. I know its one day at a time. Still processing all the feels that go along with finding myself here. Thanks again, Sabrina

  • No problem at all. Ask anything you want to know. I know how scary waiting for this kind od news is.

Yes, I had a total thyroidectomy and a neck dissection. I had one nodule, but it was 10.5cm! The cancerous part was 6.7cm.

  • Wow! That is huge and I am sorry you had to go through that but your experience gives me great hope. Thank you for sharing with me. I'm sure I am going to have some more questions for you as I get further down the road with this, I hope I can reach out to you again. Many thanks, Sabrina
