Leukemia/Lymphoma worries

Hi,

I'm not sure where to post this, please do tell me if I can post it in a more appropriate place. (Skip to the last paragraph for the actual question if you want to skip symptoms )

I have recently started developing symptoms. November 2021 I developed swollen glands, right side hasn't gone down and has become firm (doctor doesn't seem too worried about this at all). In December, I was super poorly on and off, this kept getting blamed on viral infections and colds etc. It just seemed I'd recover then get ill again a few days later. I also suffered the odd headache, crazy fatigue and a bit of joint/muscle pain and tenderness. Start of January 2022, I started developing bruises everywhere. From my upper arm to dotted bruises on the thigh, all over and in places I definitely didn't bump and no probable cause for any of them. I was also in hospital with heart palpitations and tightness in the chest (they put this down to sleep deprivation - I hadn't slept for over 3 days as I've been having problems with that too which is unlike me!) My joint pain and tenderness got worse and abdominal discomfort and what I think may be an enlarged spleen (not confirmed by a doctor so I'm not sure but not sure it can be anything else...). I've also been getting the odd night sweats and numb feet/toes.

The question is, I had bloods last week and I've just been told I have a low platelet count but nothing too extravagant. Should I be worried that this could be a slow developing Leukaemia/Lymphoma? I have a phone call with the doctor on Friday and I'm just wondering on how I can enquire about it without sounding like I'm self-diagnosing? I'm super worried and would like to know if this could potentially be a first symptom.

Thank You!

  • Welcome to our online community Morgan although I'm sorry about the symptoms you've been experiencing since November. It sounds like you've had a lot to contend with but hopefully you'll be able to get some answers and a step closer to finding out the cause when you speak to your doctor on Friday.

The NHS website has some tips and advice on what questions to ask or keep in mind when speaking with your GP but if you'd like to have a chat with one of our cancer nurses about this, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Hopefully some of our members will offer their thoughts and advice to you as well but in the meantime, we're sending our support your way and will have our fingers crossed for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
