What happens at the first appointment?

It might be fine (mightn't it?) but I've found a lump and my GO has urgently referred me to the breast clinic.

one minute I'm fine, the next minute my brain is all over the place with lots of negative thoughts. I'm sure everyone on here can relate.

I'm keen to know what might happen at the appointment. How long does it take? Is it likely you come away knowing what is wrong, or do the tests take longer than that?

Any advice/info/reassurance would be amazing.

  • Dear Holly,

I'm sorry to meet you here, you will firstly be seen by a consultant who will feel the lump and mark it with a Pen, I know it's different from patient to patient but as I am 38 I had a ultrasound but I know others had a Mammagram first. I would advise you if your allowed to take someone with you even if they wait in the car, unfortunately I didn't and wish that I had.
I was at the hospital for around 4 hours.

Depending on what the find they may do a Biospy this is painless and a standard procedure. They may give you an idea what they think on the day.

My GP said that our breast are very complex, I really hope it's good news. You doing something about it which is the main thing.
    Love Sarah
