Throat Cancer? - ENT appointment booked for Thursday

Hi All,

So between Saturday 1st January and Monday 3rd January I started experiencing an extremely sore throat, constant headaches, neck pain, back pain, dry heaving, and blurred eyesight along with blocked sinuses and cough (Home Covid Test Negative), constantly fatigued, swelling in neck, jaw ache especially at night, on and off nausea. I have also had Dull knee pain for roughly six months which at times can be very weak and difficult to walk on.

On Thursday 6th January, I attended A&E because my Uvula had swollen at the back of my throat and was blocking the back of my throat causing me to dry heave (had to move it out of the way with my fingers when I woke so I could breathe) coughed up small amounts of blood, I believe due to soreness of throat.

I was placed on Antibiotics – Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg - Two to be taken four times daily (500mg four times a day) 28 Tablets

On Monday 10th January I had a telephone appointment with my GP who confirmed he believes it might be tonsilitis, symptoms detailed above had continued but also one tonsil in the back of my throat had become swollen and I was starting to experience jaw pain and uvula had become less swollen but still not normal.

On Monday 17th January I spoke to my GP on the phone again and he suggested I go get a PCR test to make sure my symptoms weren’t covid related. The test came back the next day as negative.

On Wednesday 19th January, I had a Face to Face GP appointment advised might be bacterial Tonsilitis, I was also placed on a new lot of antibiotics, Clarithromycin 500mg (to take one every 12 hours) 14 Tablets

On Friday 21st January, it became hard for me to breathe and I had pain going up and down my right arm and pain in the right side of my chest and down my back. Called 111 and described symptoms (I was under the impression at the time it might have been an allergic reaction to the new antibiotics). Received a call back from a medical consultant, who advised me to attend A&E.

Attended A&E – received an ECG, and had a cannula placed - received steroids intravenously and given a Clarithromycin tablet to be taken orally. ENT doctor came down and performed a nasendoscopy. Advised I was swollen from the back of nasal passages and down the throat. Basic blood tests were taken – along with one blood test for glandular fever. Advised by ENT Doctor they would like to see me again in four to six weeks. Given prescription for Prednisolone 5mg – eight to be taken (40mg dose) daily for 3 days – 24 Tablets

Prednisolone appeared to cause the lump in my throat to become smaller during the three-day course but did not go away completely. Since finishing the tablets the lump has grown again.

On Tuesday 25th January, I received a letter from the hospital confirming ENT Appointment on Thursday 3rd February. My Symptoms have continued, and my Underarms appear to have swollen and are itchy along with my feet and lower legs.

Yesterday (Friday 28th January) I had a further telephone appointment with GP, spoke about continued symptoms and explained I had bad pain in the lower back and lower abdomen, along with one incident of a small amount of blood found in urine. Was advised I will need to provide a Urine sample (Red Lid), he is checking for a UTI. I was also advised by my GP that the blood tests showed I had a sort of inflammation or infection – not glandular fever.

I believe in my heart this is more serious than tonsilitis due to my ongoing symptoms and am concerned about what they will find on Thursday. Anyone on here experienced anything similar? What was your result, I don’t want to believe it might be the big C but I am worried.

Be advised I was a smoker when this all started so that raises my concern.

  • Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi Scared234,

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you've been experiencing recently. You've done all the right things in terms of getting this checked out and following the advice given to you each time. It sounds like things have moved pretty quickly for you which is of course good, although I'm sure the continued issues and uncertainty will be difficult.

It's hard to advise on what may be going on, but the main thing is you're in contact with the experts and you have an appointment coming up soon. I hope that that goes well this week and that it won't be long before you get the answers you need and hopefully peace of mind.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
