Another Haematology Referral.. In the dark and Need Advice

Hi everyone, I'm 'L' and need some advice!

In 2018 I had a Lymphoma Scare as my gastro doctor discovered on a CT scan that the lymph nodes in my stomach and in my right arm were at 1cm. Referred urgently to the blood specialist, My white blood cells were a little high too but thankfully the glands went down and the bloods went back to normal.

December 2021 I took covid (badly) and ended up in hospital for a short period of time on oxygen. I was struggling to breathe, every single time I moved. The cough was like nothing the doctors had heard before especially as I don't smoke and they were shocked as im 27, healthy and had been fully vaccinated. I honestly thought I was going to die with covid.

Bloods, an ecg and 2 xrays were taken. All that was said was that my chest xray showed small changes related to Covid and that there was a larger area on the left lung- no explanation. I was too tired to ask and wanted to get home.

2022 (one month later)... 5 days after getting out of hospital i felt like me again so after the 10 days of isolation and negative tests, I started working again.

I have been noticing things with my chest declining, on and off pain on the left side, increasing breathlessness etc and was thinking that maybe its long covid (my tests are still negative). However, I have just had a letter in the post from the consultant haematologist with blood tubes (to be tested before an outpatient telephone appointment for 2 weeks time)

no one has told me anything and im by myself with worry.

It says on the letter NOT to ring the secretary for details etc and im not sure what to do as I work a couple of mornings per week with kids.

I have been feeling abit rough in different ways but the last thing I expected was a haematology referral.

Advice would be appreciated!

  • Hi Lunaipse,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of what you've been through recently, this sounds like a lot to deal with.

In terms of the letter you received, I'm surprised it said not to call the secretary - that would have been my suggestion in terms of getting some answers. It is up to you if you would like to call them anyway if you need some answers at this point, or alternatively whether you'd prefer to wait for the appointment.

If you feel you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses about this, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

I hope you're able to get some answers soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
