CA125 & CA19-9

Hello everyone,

My mum who is 46 years old has been complaining about heavy periods and cramping for about year, she has also been feeling very nauseous lately. Two weeks ago, her bloods test came back. The CA125 was 71 and CA19-9 was 50. The rest of her bloods are okay.

She has already been to see gynae and they have said that her ovaries are clean, however they removed a few polyps and sent it for a biopsy. Today she went to get a CT scan of the abdomen to cover stomach, liver, kidneys and pancreas. Hopefully we will be getting the results soon.

I'm just wondering with both of these bloods tests coming back high, apart from cancer, could it mean anything else?

  • Hi JFSP,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It sounds like they are being thorough, which is great - and I hope it's not too much longer for you to wait to find out the results. We have a page here which may be helpful in terms of reading more on the CA125 test. I'm not best placed to answer your question, but if you'd like to speak to one of our nurses about this then you are welcome to give them a call on freephone 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi JFSP, I hope you and your mum are keeping well. I have recently been told that I have elevated ca125 and ca19-9 results (don't know how high as didn't think to ask). I am currently awaiting a date for a CT scan. My symptoms are a bit different to your mum's with my main issue being bloating, abdominal and back pain. I was diagnosed with endometriosis 20 years ago and I know this can effect ca125 and ca19-9 readings. Fingers crossed you will get the results from the scan soon and all is well
