Lump on Neck, should I have got an urgent referral?

Last September and October I was spotting blood non stop for around 40days. I went to the GP who did blood tests and sent me for an ultrasound. The ultrasound was clear and the bloods said I had anemia at which I was subscribed tablets and they said no further action. I have stopped bleeding now. However, around 6 weeks ago I noticed a small, hard, immovable lump (1-2cm) on the back of my neck. I've also had a couple nose bleeds (which is unusual) I have really bad fatigue, bone ache and on of headaches. I phoned and told the doctors last week who told me to have a full blood count (couldn't get an appointment untill next monday) and I saw a doctor today. He reffered me for an ultrasound (a routine one) which could take 2-4 weeks. I'm just worried that 2-4 weeks is a long time as everything i googled a hard, immovable, long lasting lump dosent sound good. Anyone else had this? Should I have not been reffered for an urgent ultrasound?

  • Hello Jay08,

It seems like your doctor didn't think it would be necessary for you to have an urgent ultrasound and it won't be too long now before you are seen. You could if you feel that you should have got an urgent referral talk to another doctor about this and seek a second opinion

I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting for your ultrasound. I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. Google will always bring up the worst case scenario which isn't really what you need at the moment and it will only breed more anxiety and uncertainty.  I can imagine it is hard for you to  stay away from Google at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
