Biopsy Results and Further Surgery

Hi everyone :)

I am a 20 year old university student and in September 2021 I had a mole removed from my face. I was very worried at the time and anxiously waited the biopsy results. A few months passed and I hadn't heard anything and so I rang the hospital and they informed me they didn't have my results yet. They didn't seem worried and because I was so busy with uni I sort of just forgot about it, assuming everything was fine and thinking if something was wrong I would have been contacted.

I received a letter today (5 months post removal) telling me my mole had been sent to three different hospitals as there was concern over the mole. I was informed that the mole is benign but I will have to go in for a a 'little further surgery' on the 14th of February. The letter provides no details as to why I need this surgery or what the procedure involves so I was just wondering if anyone has any advice as to what this could be?

I have looked online and the cancer research website says if a biopsy is clear and no cancerous cells are found then no further action is required so i'm worried as to why I need this second procedure if the mole was benign?

I've tried calling the number on the letter but I can't get in touch with anyone and I just keep getting out through to the skin cancer helpline to leave a message.

Any reassurance would be great as I'm already stressed enough with exams etc and this situation really isn't helping!

  • Hello katieH18084,

I just wanted to wish you the best of luck for your surgery in February. It is reassuring that they have told you that the mole was benign and I hope that you will hear from other forum members who have been in a similar position and that they will share their experience with you.

I don't know myself why you need this second procedure if the mole was benign but I am sure they will have a good reason for it. This is something they will probably be able to explain to you if you get in touch with your medical team at the hospital or as you've been having no luck getting through to anyone, you could perhaps ask your GP whether he or she could explain this to you or find this out for you.

Best wishes and good luck for your exams,
