Tumour in mouth and throat.

After finally being seen. I have been referred for a biopsy on a tumour. X-ray and MRI of my neck and head. I also have a swollen lymph node on my neck. I go next Wednesday and Thursday so not long. Any advice from anyone on what to expect, ask, how to prepare and how to keep sane till then.  Thanks

  • Hi Demus, getting yourself into a frenzy worrying about it will not help at all. Pls Occupy your mind with something else, it's the weekend, do something exciting and that you have been wanting to do for ages, but just could not find the time. Or go out for meal and concert? When you say biopsy on a tumour, where is the tumour located? and technically, its not a tumour until a pathologist confirms that it is. Did your GP or oral surgeon diagnosed it based on a physical examination and/or scope? X-ray is quite a straightforward process, no noise or pain. MRI is very noisy and claustrophobic, but  also no pain. I am slightly behind you in the diagnosis process with a CBCT scan of my teeth hours ago. Had an MRI last week with nothing sinister seen. I am seeing my consultant next week to review before he decides what to do next, maybe biopsy. All done privately because  my GP/NHS thinks I am fine and a hypochrodiac! I am glad they have not ignored/neglected you. I have had 2 ulcers on my gum for months now and of late, ear pain, sore throat, hoarse voice and feeling flu as well. You didn't mention any of your symptoms. Keep calm and positive, I know it's easier said than done, but whatever it is you are facing, being positive and calm will help. All the best.

  • Hi Harryhkk. Thanks for the the advice. I was referred to a consultant at my local hospital and he said it is a mass in my mouth that continues into my throat and he is pretty sure it's a tumour. He said that they would normally do a biopsy there but he thinks it better that he books me straight into the specialist unit at another hospital. He sent pictures of the mass to them there and then and they said they need to see me urgently. I now have 4 appointments on Wednesday and Thursday with various members of the unit. My symptoms are it hurts like hell, trouble swallowing, ear ache, very large and tender lymph node, my whole side of my jaw hurts and I'm coughing up blood. I really hope they get to the bottom of what is going on with you and such a shame you have been forced to go private. Best of luck my friend

  • How long have you had these symptoms? The mass is visible to you? Your GP referred you to an oral surgeon? Where are you located? My dentist referred me to an oral surgeon who diagnosed poor hygiene and gum disease in December. I then went to my GP for another referral and was refused, so I went private. Quite sad and scary really. All the best for your tests and treatment if necessary. Join us at
