Booked for a scan after finding a lump

Hello everyone,

I found a lump 3 weeks ago in my right breast whilst lying down. I monitored it as was on my period and when checking again this week it was still there. I went to the GP and she said she felt it to and that i needed to go for a screening as soon as possible. I am booked in for Wednesday and honestly I am freaking out. I have been going through all the possible negative scenarios in my head and can't focus on anything, this waitin is killing me. Doesn't help i googled and seen in some cases you get false negatives or the scans don't show what it should if you have denser breats tissue (I'm 36).

I keep telling myself it will be fine but so hard, I have a 4 year old and I don't want to miss out on her life! How do people manage this anxiety?

  • My wife enquired about this on her first appointment a few months ago. For lumps to not show up on scans etc is rare. CUP cancer aside, the lumps that tend not to show up are of the benign variety or are so small no scan would pick them up and the chances are, you'd not be able to feel it either. It's why chemo is used as it's a systematic treatment aimed at sweeping up any cells that may be there that can't be seen via scans.

Density does affect clarity (hence why young females aren't routinely given mammograms), but there are other tools out there if the lump is palpable and concerning or they simply can't be sure.
