Worried my 2 year old has lymphoma

Hi there,

So I took my 2 year old to A&E back in December 2021 as he was vomiting green vile, they put it down to a nasty vomiting bug (which I think was definetly correct as we all came down with it after), anyway, whilst we were there I noticed a small lump in his neck, about a size of a pea and asked the doctore there about it. She said it was normal when they have an infection but if it doesn't go within 2 weeks take him to our GP.

So I left it 3 weeks, it hadn't gone. I was also worried because he is always tired, never wants to do much other than snuggle and will do like 10/15 minutes of running around before he wants to just sit down for ages again. He also doesn't eat very much at all and is constantly ill. Over the past year, he's been on antibiotics twice for chest infections. So the doctor said it is probably nothing and the lymph nodes will take some time to go down. But to be safe, he would order a blood test. The blood test came back with decreased electrolytes and slightly raised LDH levels, nothing too concerning the GP said but didn't give us a reason as to why this would be. He referred us to the Peadreactic team at the hospital and said we would be seen within two weeks. However, the consultant there reviewed my sons case and wasn't concerned so a they would offer him a normal referral which could be 4-8 weeks.

I then found more lumps about a week later, and the original one was still there and had grown. The GP said it was fine and to wait for our appointment which isn't until the 16th February 2022. I asked if there was anything we could do to speed up the referral as I'm really concerned but he said no. So I've been monitoring the lumps, the other ones are still there and the original one is there, bigger than a pea now probably just a shy smaller than a malteaser. He also keeps itching his neck and he barely is eating at all and is off his food, which isn't like him. He is still always tired and he is so incredibly pale. I think it could be lymphoma. I'm worried because I have a history of anxiety, the doctors think I'm overreacting so aren't taken me seriously. But it's been 6 weeks since I found the first one and it's gotten bigger since then. I don't know what to do...

  • Hello Libbyloulou

I'm sorry to hear that your little one has been unwell over the past month. It's natural that you're feeling anxious and I think most parents will understand that.

It's good to hear that you do have an appointment arranged with the paediatrician for the 16th of Feb. I know that it's still a few weeks away yet so do get back in touch with your GP again. Let them know that you've found new lumps and that the original lumps have grown. Ask them to update the original referral so that the specialist can decide if they want to bring the appointment forwards.

It can help to talk things through with someone and if you think it may help to chat to one of our team of nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they'll be happy to offer any advice and support that they can.

I hope that the specialists are able to give you some reassurance and that your little boy improves soon.

    Best wishes,
