Worried about symptoms

Hi, I'm new to the forum and have myself worried sick about symptoms I've been having for quite some time. Hoping I can get a bit of advice or reassurance. Sorry for long post.

I have been experiencing foul smelling discharge for quite a while, I've had swabs taken previously and was prescribed antibiotics which didn't help, if anything the smell has gotten worse to the point I am convinced others can smell it too. I had merina coil fitted about 5 years ago and have never had much bother with it, apart from periods being heavy. They were always very regular. Recently periods have become extremely heavy with large clots (sorry for tmi) and could last up to 12 days. I have suffered from low iron and was putting it down to heavy bleeds. I get put on iron for 3 months which helps but when I stop taking bloods drop again. I have also started to bleed between periods, although lighter it can last for 5 days. I have also started to feel nauseous regularly. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was about 18 but went on to have 3 children without any trouble (I'm now 43).

I know its the worst thing I can do but have asked Dr Google and have myself convinced I have cervical cancer! I have booked for smear next Tuesday and hoping it will give reassurance. I did have an abnormal smear in 2010 and had colposcopy, smears have been normal since.

Thank you for reading and any advice

My first piece of advice would be to step away from Dr Google-it really doesn’t help to diagnose you, and can cause so much stress and anxiety.

Your symptoms could be caused by lots of other gynaecological issues, so don’t assume you have cervical cancer or indeed any kind of cancer. A smear test isn’t a diagnostic test for cervical cancer-it’s a screening test for abnormal cells, testing for the HPV virus, but when you go for your smear next week, if anything of concern is seen then you would be referred to a gynaecologist for further investigation.

I’m sorry you have convinced yourself already that you have cervical cancer, as I imagine it may be hard to get that thought out of your head. But try not to dwell on such a negative potential outcome. You don’t have cancer until a doctor says you do, not google! I was quite the opposite-never went near google, and never for a second thought I had cervical cancer. It turned out I did, but I saved myself weeks of additional stress and worry by not diagnosing myself in advance.

I hope your appointment goes well and you can be reassured.
