Calcification and discharge

Hi!

Hope everyone is doing ok and thank you in advance for reading this.

I had a mammogram in early December due to some breast pain and discharge. They found calcification in the left breast. Then had ultrasound and nothing found so said they would see me again in 8 weeks.

Second appointment mid Jan and had breast exam, discharge still present so advised that she would see me again in 4 weeks and probably refer for a surgical procedure.

I then got two appointment letters on the same day, one for the follow up and one for a stereotactic biopsy the week before. This hadn't been mentioned so was a little confused.

Have done a fair bit of googling (not always a good idea I know) but on the basis of this I am assuming the biopsy is related to the calcification and the possible surgery (total duct excision) related to the discharge.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone had experience of similar and any words of wisdom!

Feeling a bit anxious but trying not to catastrophise!!

Thanks, T

  • Hello PositiveT

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some ongoing concerns about your breast health recently. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious.

A stereotactic biopsy is used when abnormalities are seen on a mammogram but can't be seen on an ultrasound. It's a more effective way for the Consultant to make sure that they are biopsying the correct area. Hopefully, the information they get from the results will help them in planning the most appropriate next steps for you.

I can see that you've been chatting with members on other threads and I'm glad that you've found some support there. I wanted to let you know that we do have a team of nurses here at Cancer Research UK that you can call to chat things through with. I'm sure they will be happy to try and offer any advice, information, and support that they can. If you'd like to speak with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch over the next few weeks and let us know how you're getting on.

    Best wishes,
