Cervical Biopsy

I have just recently been diagnosed with Moderate Dyskaryosis, and have been in to hospital for the LLETZ procedure. I now have to wait 4 weeks for the results. Is this just to tell me they have caught the area in full with the abnormal cells. Or do they send the samples off for further cancer screening also. Has anyone had the results back to say they have actual cancer and need further treatment or is this a really low percentage of people?.

I am trying to stay positive that it will all just be ok as its made out to be fairly common and so is the procedure?... although not a nice experince have to say!. But if im honest it all just seems a bit of a grey area in terms of what the next stages are pending results. Nobody has mentioned the C word, so If they come back all ok do I just take it I process the fact I had some sort of pre cancerous cells or just abormal cells and they have gone now all done and dusted?.. it has all been very quick from getting the letter to say and then the procedure and I know I probably haven't asked as many questions as I should have as I just wanted to be in and out. Everything I google doesnt really give me the answers im looking for and  I wouldnt normally go on a forum but here we are?.

Anyway just looking for other peoples experiences, and should I be worried or just getting on with it?.

  • Hi feelingfree

The moderate dyskariosis is abnormal, pre cancerous, cells, which is why no-one will have mentioned cancer at this point. It is not cancer. The tissue taken by the lletz treatment is sent for analysis to make sure that there are clear margins round where the abnormal cells have been removed and make sure there are none remaining.

It is true to say your smear result is extremely common, as is the lletz treatment. It is possible for these results to show cancer but highly unlikely, as the point of the screening programme is to detect abnormal cells and remove them long before they would ever(if they even did) turn cancerous.

Procedures and processes are actually very standard-if you have clear margins and all the cells have been removed, that’s you sorted. If clear margins are not obtained, another lletz might have to be performed to deal with any cells remaining.

Google is likely to confuse and potentially worry you, so I’d steer well clear. I hope this has helped to put your mind at rest and your results give you the all clear (which is the most likely outcome). x

  • Hi as minska explained moderate is pre cancerous so try not to worry, easier said than done. 20 yrs ago oct this year I had CIN2 & had the lletz procedure, & (not sure how long after) then had a different 1, it felt like a freezing cold stamp you'd use for ink or wax but cannot remember what it's called, due to there being family history on my mums side I was booked in for a hysterectomy the following June but fell pregnant with my youngest, I've been having yearly smears ever since, this year being my last, in all that time I only had 1 other that came back as having abnormal cells again cin1 (that may even have been why I had the other procedure) I think the yearly smears were due to family history. I had a smear a few weeks ago that came back clear of hpv, the nurse explained they're only checking for hpv now, I'm not sure if that's correct but I'm due to have another to check for cells for peace of mind.

The good thing is your gynae is on the ball & likely to remain so too maybe make a list of questions for when you go back for your results to ease any concerns you have.

Keep in touch be good to hear your good news

    Best of luck
