Breast biopsy - bad news given via telephone?

I just wondered if anyone who has been through this can give any advice. I had a breast biopsy and they said possible fibroadenoma but would do a biopsy. It's 1cm. I have been given a two week wait and a phone call appt for the results. My question is if there was cancer would they wait two weeks and would they tell you over the phone? I called the clinic and asked for an earlier appt and they only could do two hours early. I asked the question that does everyone have telephone calls for the results abs the receptionist said she just gets told who is to have a phone call and who she needs to arrange a phone call gave to face. So they do do face to face appts. Can anyone help? I going out of my mind.

  • I had a face to face to get my biopsy results, and waited just 4 days.

  • Can I ask if it was good or bad news?

  • It was breast cancer, but I tried to stay positive. I've now had my surgery, and radiotherapy, and got to ring the bell 3 weeks ago. I tried chemotherapy, but gave up after 2 cycles, my vein had damage and  I was in some pain. Hpwever, it was my choice to do it as I have been very lucky, and it was caught early, and not in my lymph nodes.

I sincerely hope that all goes well for you, it can be very overwhelming at first, but myself, I had a great team and a lovely breast care nurse, who was always at the end of the phone if I needed her.

Can I ask what area you're in? I'm in the North East and had my surgery and chemo at Gateshead, and my radiotherapy at Newcastle.

  • Fantastic news. Well done for staying so strong and brave. I'm from Cornwall. They told me whilst at the clinic two weeks but it's been a week and I would think the biopsy results would be back and kind of hoping they would phone me if it was bad rather than phoning me in another weeks time.

  • Unfortunately, it sounds like you'll have to wait , which I think is wrong, but hopefully, it's not bad news. Please let me know how you get on, and I'm here if you need someone to talk to. x

  • I feel like my life is on hold. I can't plan anything, can't sleep it's a constant feeling. Did you have an ultra sound and did they tell you what they thought it was before your biopsy results? Thank you for offering an ear. I have only told two people about it and I can't really talk to them as I know they just feel sorry for me x

  • Hi,

I'm waiting for telephone results too and completely understand the horrible "waiting" stage. There are some recent BMJ articles from 2019 that have information relating to telephone appointments for results. The consensus being that the majority of the time only benign results would be delivered over the phone and unfortunately it didn't speed up the results being received!

It isn't just the processing of your results in the lab. Alll the people you have seen at your visit will talk through every patient to make sure they all agree on your diagnosis. Waiting for that meeting can add time on unfortunately.

The Dr I saw (who was sure I too have a Fibroadenoma) did state that I would receive biopsy  results by phone call. Although did add rather quietly as I was leaving unless it was something more sinister!

Lack of sleep really won't be helping your well-being, have you contacted your GP to see if they can help over this short-term worrying time?

    Best wishes, Em x

  • Thank you for your reply. It's just so major, you're either ok or you have cancer. They couldn't feel anything on the examination but said she will put me forward for an ultrasound for my benefit. Then the lady doing the ultrasound sound said she thinks she can see something small and asked for a doctor to come in. She was quick and looked at it and said she thinks it's a fibroadenoma. I know they said it was a hard lump and it's 1cm. When are you having your results? It's its benign what would they need to talk about? I guess no news is good news. X

  • I didn't have an ultrasound, I had a couple of biopsies taken and was told that the consultant radiographer thought it was cancer, but I had to go back 4 days later to be told it was, my hubby was with me. After that it was non stop appointments, but we did get away for 10 days which was good. After I got back I had my surgery, then had to go back, I can't remember how long after, to be told they'd got good margins and it hadn't gone into my lymph nodes, hence I was very lucky. I sincerely hope that they're giving you a phone appointment because it's not cancer. Xxxx

  • If the sonographer spots something solid even if it "looks" like a Fibroadenoma and you are over 30 at our clinic they "have" to biopsy it - just the rules! My lump is hard to feel and I forgot to ask the size *rolls eyes* Results are on 27th so I will ask then.

I know it is hard but try and focus on something that gives you pleasure, it might give you a bit of respite from worrying x
