Spotting for 10 weeks, 24yo, cervical cancer scans?

Hello All,
I've been spotting/ bleeding now for 10 weeks. I am 24 years old and had thyroid cancer when I was 19 (had two hemithyroidectomies). I had a smear 5 months ago and it confirmed I have HPV, but no signs of abnormalities. I have had a merina coil fitted for 4 years with no issues. I spoke to my doctors before christmas and they have referred me to my local gynae department; I have spoken to them and they have said I probably won't get fitted in for another 6 weeks (even though my doctor said it was urgent).

I am going away for a month next week and as I have bad anxiety I really don't want me worrying to ruin the trip for me/ others. I am really concerned that it could be symptomns of cervial cancer and I have decided that if I can get fitted in privately, I will try go and get a scan done. The problem is when I ring up they ask what scan I want (my doctor hasnt referred me for a particular scan), and after researching there are still a few different ones I can have. Has anyone has similar symptoms who has gone on to have a certain kind of scan. With having had cancer before I no longer feel invincable and feel like 'it'll all be okay' which is why I am wanting to get seen sooner. Struggling to concrentrate on the everyday at the minute as I am ovethinking it all the time

Thank you in advance for any help/ recomendations.

  • Hello Liv4444,

I am sorry to hear about this bleeding you have been experiencing and that you won't get to see someone for several weeks. I can understand with you going away for a month next week that you would like to see someone before if possible and get this properly looked at. I don't think you should be the one deciding though for the particular scan you want to have and it would be a good idea to talk to a doctor first about it whether private or on the NHS and see whether they can refer you. They will know what scan to refer you to based on your particular symptoms so I think it is best to have the advice of a medical expert on this first. I completely understand that having had cancer before, you will want to be seen sooner rather than later. So I think the best thing to do is to talk to your GP and see where you go from there and insist that you would like to be seen if possible before you go away.

I hope that you will also hear from other members who have been through this before and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
