17 F, possible breast cancer symptom

I found a brown bruise like spot and research on it led me to inflammatory breast cancer. I know given my age it isn't very likely but I do have bad anxiety so I thought I might post here. This brown spot has since gone but when looking into this type of breast cancer one of the most common symptoms is an orange peel like dotting on the breasts which I very clearly have, more deeply than just pores though it still might just be that. I really don't want to go to the doctor and show my chest but I am still a bit worried. I don't think I'm sick but I can't be 100% sure. Do you think I should just not worry about it or have it checked out at some point?

  • Hi Catlover,

If this symptom is unusual for you or won’t go away, it would be best to speak with your doctor. In most cases it's highly unlikely it would be cancer, but it's always good to get symptoms checked out, if only for peace of mind.

If you're feeling a bit nervous or uncomfortable with the idea of showing your chest to the doctor, do be sure to let them know as I'm sure they will do everything they can to make you feel more at ease. If you feel it would help, you could also ask to be seen by a female doctor.

Hopefully some of our members will offer their thoughts and advice to you soon but in the meantime I hope you're able to get this looked at and that it turns out to be no cause for concern.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks for the reply. I'm still not sure if it's worth the visit. I'm also autistic and I feel like it would make the appointment even more stressful, especially since only my father could come with me. I do get chest acne so maybe the red dots are linked to that, just clogged pores though they never seem to go away and there are some deeper red dots too. I think some of those might just be acne scars though. I didn't even think much of how my chest looked before I saw the brown spot (which like I said went away for some reason after about two weeks) and discovered the orange peel like dotting can also be symptom. I'm not sure for how long it's been like that, but again it maybe just be linked to chest acne. I haven't told a parent because it's very awkward and I don't want to make something out of nothing, especially for an area that private.

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I can understand that this situation makes you feel awkward to talk about with your parent. But it is always a good idea to get new things checked by a Doctor. A female nurse can be with you in the room if that would make you feel better, and a curtain would be drawn round the bed while you were examined so your dad would be present in the room but wouldn't see anything.

It would be unusual for you to have breast cancer at 17, but it is good to get changes assessed by a health professional. Stress and anxiety around health, which is very common, can be difficult to manage and control. Here is a link about anxiety which may be helpful, and here is a link to anxiety and autism.

Take care Catlover, and I hope you get the support and answers you need soon.

    Sarah.
