Colonoscopy - sedation didn't work for me

I've had a colonoscopy today. I opted to take sedation. Which DID NOT work at all. Nothing, zero, zilch. The paperwork said that they would administer the drugs and you would feel all relaxed and very sleepy and that after the procedure, you probably wont even remember it.

I was FULLY alert throughout the whole agonising process. The gas and air they gave me also did nothing what so ever. At points I was screaming in agony telling them to stop. I was just told to relax. Utter joke. I was sweating like a pig and shaking like a *** dog. I'm surprised the bars on the bed didn't bend I was gripping them so hard. 'Can you just relax and sink ito the bed' Hard, no, impossible to do when you are writhing in absolute agony. At the start it was... administer the drugs and within 3 seconds the camera was inside and so was the compressed air. Good god. No check to see if they drugs were actually working. Wham bam thank you Ma'am.

There was a polyp they found, that they wanted to remove. But couldn't quite get at it?? So I've got to go back and have it all done again. If They are unwilling to give me a full anesthetic I'm not going through that again. Oh and if they couldn't get this time how the hell are they going to get it the second time?

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Bogger although I'm really sorry to read about your colonoscopy experience.

From the posts I've come across on the forum, it seems this procedure can be quite hit and miss, but our members who have, sadly, had a similar experience to your own will really understand what you went through and hopefully you will receive some support and advice from them soon.

If you would like to make a complaint about how you were treated and looked after during the procedure, you can find out how just here.

    Kind regards,

  • I went through exactly the same experience as you. This was two days ago and I'm still very upset. I'm definitely writing a letter of complaint. The doctor was telling me to be quiet when I was crying in agony. The nurse was trying to talk to me but I couldn't answer because I was to busy saying ahhhhh with the pain. She was telling me to breathe through my nose. The fact is they didn't even take the time to find out if I could breathe through my nose, which is totally blocked and needs a polyp operation.

I felt just like the OP here. I was treated very badly in a slapdash way. Also what was the point of me having an escort if the sedation didn't even work? I definitely don't want to do that again in 6 months.
