Scared!! Awaiting a urgent referral appointment on Tuesday

Hi, so I have always suffered with bowel problems since a child. Was admitted to hospital aged 9 twice how bad my constipation was. Am now 31 and always been used to constipation. For the last 7 months ish I have bleed everytime I go to the toilet, at first just noticed blood on tissue. Now it's gotten to the point it's mixed in with poop and the toilet full of blood. I finally went to Drs on Thursday for this. He took notes on how my health has been also lost 5st in a year without trying. He did blood tests and asked for a sample of my stool for testing. Also got me an urgent referral for Tuesday morning to see a consultatant as my GP believes I need a colonoscopy. Obviously panicking how quick it all is, also regret leaving it this long. But I had convinced my self was a fissure or piles. Drs examination doesn't suggest this

  • Obviously, I don't know your specific circumstances, but at your age, cancer would be unlikely. I am ten years older than you and had some symptoms over the summer - mainly rectal bleeding, admittedly just on the paper - and the specialist told me that if my mother came in with the same symptoms, he would be concerned about cancer, but at my age, it was possible but highly unlikely and I would have to be very unlucky for that to end up being the solution, that the most likely explanation was piles with IBD also a possibility.

They did a colonoscopy and found piles. I will add that my GP found nothing suggestive of that either and a nurse said this was quite common, that if the piles are internal, they often wouldn't be picked up in a general examination.

There are lots of things that can cause blood in stools - IBD, polyps, fissures, piles, certain infections...

One good thing is that you have gotten an appointment so quickly. I know that is scary, but it does mean that you will know pretty quickly what is wrong and if it is something minor, you'll get reassurance and if it is something serious, they will treat it pretty quickly. I am in Ireland and with the cyberattack, I ended up waiting from early June to mid-August to get an appointment.

  • Thank you for your reply. Am glad to hear everything was okay, such a long wait for you though wasn't it. My GP said exact same thing about age aswell but suggested best to get it checked. The fissures and piles I had years ago was never this bad but presumed same thing so left it but gotten a lot worse with mucus now aswell.

sorry for TMI am due my period tomorrow so thinking Tuesday they will examine me do I rearrange the appointment or is it just normal for them
