5 year old with lump in neck

My 5 year old son has had a swollen lymph node in his neck since late November. It's towards the back of the side of his neck. He had had an ear infection that side for a few weeks so put it down to that. Took him to the doctor who said the same but said to come back in 4 weeks if it's not gone down, it hasn't.

so I called this week and spoke to a different doctor, said it's the same, about 1.5 cms, firm, but not fixed in place (doesn't move quickly though). She called the paediatric team at the hospital who suggested doing an ultrasound so now waiting for that.

He's otherwise well, we've had covid over Christmas/new year so this could have prolonged it staying swollen I guess, but I'm so worried that is hasn't gone and that it's not soft and freely moveable.

he keeps clearing his throat as lot the past few weeks too (since covid), I'm the same but I can't help worry it's linked.

has anyone got any experience of neck lumps in kids that stay swollen?

  • Hi MJ85,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It's good to hear you have a follow-up in place for this - hopefully it won't be long to wait for that appointment and then the results to follow. It sounds like there could be some explanations for this, if he has been ill a couple of times recently. I can understand this must be unsettling and the waiting for answers is never easy, so I hope you hear more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,
