2 week wait and covid

Hi everyone - feeling really anxious. I went to the doctors Thursday as I had found a lump in my breast the day before.  As I expected he said I would need to be referred for an urgent assessment.  I knew it would be a 2 week wait and the doctor said that if I hadn't hear anything by yesterday to ring the breast clinic.

I had a really busy day at work and came home and called the clinic as I hadn't heard anything at that point.  Spoke to a lovely lady over the phone to be told it will be 5 - 6 weeks for an appointment due to the backlogs.  She was very apologetic and quite frankly angry as I was the 4th patient who she has spoken in about 20 minutes and had to tell them the same thing.  The 2 week wait is a 5 -6 weeks.  Is anyone else having the same wait?  I'm worried that if I do need treatment then things could be much worse in 6 weeks time compared to now.

  • Hi,

I had the same story. I was warned though it could be 4 weeks and it's just shy of 3 weeks so better than I was anticipating. I hope you get something faster as 6 weeks is the longest I've heard.

  • I posted a similar thread earlier today.
Last week I was referred for an urgent 2 week appointment at gynaecology. I chased it up today and got told 4-6 weeks

can I ask which area of the country you are in? I'm wondering if this is affecting everywhere cos I'm surprised we're not hearing more about this!  Boris says the NHSis not overwhelmed ‍♀️
    I'm north east.

  • I was more than 2 weeks for an urgent referral PRE covid. So it happened before covid was a thing. I don’t think my area was relevant-they just happened to be extremely busy, which is what they told me.

  • Hello there - I'm in the Midlands too and got referred on 15/12 - my appointment was today (and thankfully everything was clear)

I rang the Rapid Referral number every morning around 9.45am  - they were really kind- I said I would take any short notice cancellations and/or go to any of the 3 hospitals in our area. I got seen in 4 weeks and that was with Christmas/New Year in the middle.

In the end I only got about 36 hours notice for my appointment but that was fine

Fingers crossed yours comes up soon - let us know? Its torture waiting xx

  • I'm new to this and not sure if you can see my reply to Worried so I'm re-posting it here:

  • Hi there, similar situation here - noticed breast lump getting bigger over the course of 3 months until it reached the point it is now visible to the naked eye along with a large crater underneath. Saw GP on 05/01 who found referred and asked me to ring them if I hadn't had any correspondence within 48 hours. He also said that the suspected cancer referrals are delayed BUT it shouldn't be longer than two weeks as they are prioritising referrals based on GP notes.

Didn't receive a call and 3 days later I rang GP who assured me I will be seen by the 19th latest as that's what they've requested. An appt came through for the 02/02, 4 weeks. Anyway I have been logging in on the nhs to keep clicking change appt time and finally this morning there must have been a cancellation and have one for next week! Which will be 2 weeks and 1 day.

So if any of you have the NHS app where you get your covid certificate on, if you have linked it to your doctors then you can find your appt in the appointments and hospital referrals section and click change time and keep checking!

Lots of love and luck xxxz

  • thats so useful to know - will you let us know how you get on? Everything crossed for you xxx

  • Argh that sounded like such a great option but my hospital appointment isn't showing on there. I would have happily kept trying to see if there were cancellations.

  • On my NHS App, under hospital appointments it just says "referral being reviewed". (It's been 8 days now)

will this update once they issue appointment, and is that when I'll have the option to change it?

I've been referred on a 2ww, but advised they have a delay of 4 weeks
