Waiting Biopsy results & need your advice

Hi,

A lump appeared suddenly at the bottom of my neck on 29th Oct. 21 The GP tested thryoid function and bloods came back normal. She then red flagged me to ENT for Ultrasound and Biopsy.

The lump is painless, 9x5cm and immovable, it grew substantially in the first 2 weeks then stopped. Lately I have some pain in my ear and a little pain in the lower neck.

I had biopsy 4 weeks ago and was expecting a letter confirming results, however consultant has scheduled an apt. in 10 days time. I am assuming that given the lengthy wait, I have nothing to worry about. (As you can imagine I've been worried sick)

I'd really appreciate it if anyone share their experience of similar wait time and good/bad news?

Thanks !

  • Hi. I had thyroid cancer two years ago, so if that is what you are worried about, I can give you some reassurance.

Firstly, thyroid nodules are extremely common. If that is even what you have. I have read that maybe a quarter of the population have thyroid nodules and the vast majority are completely benign.

And even if it does turn out to be thyroid cancer, which is improbable, that still isn't anything like what you may be imagining when you hear the word "cancer." For a start, the most common form of thyroid cancer has a near 100% survival rate among under 50s. I think it is something like 99.8%. And they very rarely use chemotherapy or anything like that. Even if it is thyroid cancer, the odds are they will just remove your thyroid, you'll spend a few days in hospital and then get back to normal.

It does mean you have to take medication for the rest of your life to replace your thyroid, but that just literally means I take two pills every morning.

I will say I had an appointment for results scheduled for a week after my biopsy (and they really didn't seem to think there was anything to worry about) and they rang in the interval to ask for the ultrasound to be sent to them, so not hearing anything might possibly be a good sign. I am in Ireland so very different system though, so I don't know.
