Indeterminate breast calcifications

Hi, has anyone else had this issue?  I went into breast clinic with another lump (I've had numerous fluid filled cysts over the last four years).  That was all fine but they flagged up calcifications on the other side.  I was really shocked.  I've got a biopsy next week and I'm in that horrible inbetween place of not knowing and worrying.  Is this likely to be DCIS?  Thanks x

  • Hi,

Sorry to meet you here. It's pretty common to find calcifications, so I was told. Did they tell you if the suspected macro or micro calcifications? I went with a lump in my right breast and during the checks (mammogram) they then told me that they had found a cluster of microcalcifications. They didn't say much more at the time other than wanted a stereotactic biopsy on those microcalcifications also.  It was in my case the same breast, but it can be either from what I've read and been told by others experiences and consultants etc.

The biopsy will enable them to know if the calcifications are benign or pre cancerous, such as DCIS as you mention.

I know it's hard, but try not to worry the majority of calcifications statistically are benign and worst case scenario pre cancerous and therefore easily treatable.

I hope this helps a bit.

  • Hi Mickey,

Thanks for replying.  I phoned the clinic today and all the nurse would say was that these calcifications were 'indeterminate'.  I've taken that as being suspicious!  Didn't say if they were macro or microcalcifications although I'm suspecting micro as otherwise I wouldn't be having the biopsy which I think is next week.  I dont even know what type of biopsy, they didn't say.  I'm grateful for them being thorough but it felt like being on a treadmill of one in, one out, I was shocked how many ladies were in on the same day.  I've never seen the breast clinic so busy and I've seen a lot of it getting all my cysts checked over the last 4 years.   Did you have a biopsy, how was it, and how long did you wait for the results?

if you've been through all this too, I hope you had a good outcome.  Sending a hug back.  x

  • Hi, I did get my results by phone in the end and so I would just say if they agree to a phone call please have someone with you when they call. Whether they tell you or is benign or otherwise, your rollercoaster of emotions will kick in again and you are unlikely to take in all that they say. Please keep us updated, sending virtual hugs xx ️

  • Thanks. I agreed that if he is OK with giving me results over the phone, I would go in on Friday daytime to dicuss thoroughly with him also. My only problem is just having my son here so just can't go in on an evening. No babysitter or inlaws close by. Plus my son doesn't miss a trick! He'd be wondering where I am etc. Xx

  • I totally understand that - been there too. If they agree and you have a local friend just ask them to be with you, so you have support xx

  • Hi Mary,

I just wanted to say that I'll be thinking of you tomorrow. Prayers for good results! <3 xxx

  • Oh Linze thank you so much.  Yes tomorrow at 3.15.  I phoned yesterday and today and spoke to consultants secretary but the biopsy wasn't in apparently.  I did get a call back from a nurse who confirmed they would def be in tomorrow in time for the multi disciplinary meeting and she said I was "on the list".  That didn't reassure me!  Im thinking if the result was benign then the Dr would have phoned me as they did last summer when I had a hysteroscopy and uterine biopsy which was fine.   All of that didn't seem half as scary as this!

I'm overthinking as ever wondering if the secretary and nurse just said they weren't in to deflect until Wednesday as a secretary wouldn't give out bad news!

i don't know why but I just felt I wanted to know before I see the consultant.  I wanted to absorb bad news at home.  The drive in tomorrow will be terrible, I don't know how I'll get through it.  I've decided to prepare myself for bad news then anything else is a bonus. Thankfully my husband is coming with me.

When are your results in?  Was it this week?  I wish you all the best too and I'm saying a prayer tonight for us all.

    Thanks again.  x

  • Bless you, I would be the same! But try not to read in to it, I'm sure they're just following procedures.

Hope to hear some good news very soon.

  • And my biopsy is tomorrow xxx

  • Hi Vicki,

Have you had your results yet? Xxx

  • Hello

Yes last night he called. I have DCIS and some IDC. Been for bloods today. Am having MRI scan today and also waiting for a PET ct scan appointment. It's been awful. My son off sick too so came with me today and I felt sick to the stomach looking at my imaging request forms. Just utterly awful. I just keep thinking how will I get through this? I just want to live. But my mind keeps taking me to the saddest and darkest places. Xx

  • Oh Vicki,

I'm so sorry to be reading this!! But from what I've read, it's easily treatable. I hope that you're able to make a plan that you're happy with. Have you been given details of a breast care nurse yet? Will be thinking of you. Do you have anyone to talk to? Xxx

  • Hi

I don't have details of any nurse yet. My neighbour is 5 years breast cancer free and she came over in her dressing gown last night bless her. Her sister is 11 years cancer free and is also a macmillan buddy. I was told I could call her anytime so I did today. I just cried and got my fear out. I think waiting for these scans and subsequent results is going to be so hard for me. I just want to know what is going to happen and just get on with it. How are you doing? Xx

  • Oh bless you. It must be so hard to try and keep it together for your son. I remember seeing my mom cry when she got her diagnosis. I can still picture it now.

Yes, the waiting in between must be so hard. But it seems like they're being very good! It's really good you have private health care!

Oh good, I'm glad you have people to talk too. That's very reassuring to be around people how have come through the other side, and know exactly what you're going through.

Keep us updated with your progress.

Will keep you in my prayers that you can get some positive plans in place, and that you can get this dealt with easily and quickly, and back to focusing on good times with your boy.

I'm ok thank you. Got my biopsy tomorrow, Dr has given me some diazepam to keep me calm! Xxx

  • Good luck for your biopsy. Glad you have some diazepam. I had some myself and have been taking it just to get through these past few days whilst getting my head around what has actually happened. Thinking of you tomorrow. Xx

  • Thank you Vicki. I just didn't want to end up not having it tomorrow because I've got myself it a state! So I hope the diazepam will help!

I hope that things are a lot clearer and more positive for you in the next few days. Xxx

  • What mg are your tablets? If you are super anxious, 2mg probably won't cut it. Are you allowed to have someone with you? If so and you aren't driving etc, then maybe split tablets and take closer to 3mg? I find that it does take the edge off massively. What time are you due in? Xx

  • Ok, thank you! I'm not sure. The Dr only gave me 2. I'll check in the morning. My husband is going to drive me in.
    Thank you xxx

  • My appointment is at 12:30. Xx
