Cervical cancer

Hi, I've been experiencing a lot of symptoms since October. I've had lower right pelvic pain and lower back pain all right since. At first I thought it could have been bowels but all that has seemed to have settled toliet wise. I still get the lower pelvic and back pain all right sided. My period was late October, November and not taken a period since the 23rd of November so technically missed a period!! I have been with my partner for 9 years and recently having sex I've found it extremely painful and nothing blood afterwards. I have also took serval pregnancy tests which has came back negative and I'm not on any birth control. I went to my gp who advised my smear is not due until September. She checked my cervix and advised that she could see a ectropion on my cervix. She then said she has to refer me to a gynocolgist for them to look into it further to make sure that it is nothing sinister. I asked how long the wait was and she said I could be waiting 6/7 weeks for this appointment. My worry is this has been going on for 3 months now waiting even longer for further appointments. What if this is sinister and it's getting left this long. Has anyone ever experienced anything similar?

thanks in advance. Going out of my head with worry!!

  • I know your right! Staying positive with my health anxiety is realllllyyy difficult! I struggle to think positive.

I never knew that you could be born with it, I'm just wondering if i do have this and I was born with it why would it just start bleeding now? Ive also had 2 smears within a 3 year gap since I was 19 all came back clear however wondering why the ecptropian was never noticed before then. I've been with my partner for over 9 years now.
Out of interest do you know if even just having sex can cause this? Like I mentioned before it's something I've struggled with for a while due to discomfort?
I hope we get our appointments soon and can hopefully get the answers we need.

    thank you xxxx

  • Hi GIrl26

Yes, you can be born with cervical ectropion, or it can develop later in life.

It is not caused by sex-it’s a term for when the cells from inside the cervix grow on the outside. These cells are glandular cells which are red, so the area can look red.

Sex can make the area bleed, and ectropion can also cause bleeding or discomfort during sex, spotting between periods and discharge. Some people don’t have any symptoms, and it can go away without treatment.x

  • Hello again,

so if I was born with it why would I start showing symptoms now for example bleeding after sex after being with my partner for so long.. also if you can be born with it or develop it I'm not understanding how it could heal on its own. I think I'm just so confused by it all :(. I'm just so convinced it's something else due to my pelvic and back pain also along with missing my periods etc.

    thank you

  • Hi

I was just clarifying what cervical ectropion is, because you said in your first post that the gp had identified this when you were examined, in case you weren’t fully aware of what it is.

But the only person who can diagnose your symptoms is the gynaecologist when you have your appointment. For now, trying to guess and self diagnose will likely only lead you to further worry and confusion. No-one here can second guess what is wrong, and trying to compare symptoms with someone else can be quite unhelpful as everyone is different and may have very different explanations and outcomes. x

  • I completely agree! I just think with my health anxiety it's really hard not to compare, wonder, or self diagnose. It's really difficult. I'm trying to stay as positive as I can but every little twinge or pain in my tummy or back, even discomfort down below is sending me through the roof.

i have came home from work and have my appointment next wednday the 19th!!!! I'm really nervous. It says rapid assessment unit and just over worrying they think it's sinister if I'm getting seen to this fast.

thanks again for taking the time to message me I really do appreciate it xxxx

  • Hi Girl26

Thats great you’ve got your appointment for next week-not long to wait.

Don’t overthink the name of the place you’re being seen. No-one knows what’s wrong yet, including your doctor, so how can they think it might be sinister? Just be thankful you’re being seen quickly as you’ll have answers quicker. Try and think of it being a positive thing instead of having to wait weeks. x

  • Hey!

did you ever get to the bottom of your diagnosis? I'm 27, mum of two and I've been suffering with irregular bleeding, pain during sex, and pain in my lower stomach/back. I have had two csections with the last being in September just gone so I wasn't sure if the pain was from that but the go has referred me for an urgent scan which is tomorrow. I also suffer stupidly bad for health anxiety which I am having counselling for. Can't help but think the worst x

  • Hi,

sorry it's taken a while for me to get back! I ended up having an ectropion which needed burnt off after having a cervix examination by gyno. I'm still waiting on my pelvic ultrasound to see if I have cysts due to the pain in my lower right tummy.

hope your ultra sound went ok! How did you get on?

    :)
