Lump in armpit

Hello everyone,

I'm new on here and have been hoovering reading posts, but got the courage to post today. I am looking for advice really so here's goes..
Found a lump in my left armpit at the end of Nov, didn't think anything of it. Intially thought was swollen gland/lymph node, even though I have not been ill etc. Been to see my GP this morning who advised it's not a swollen lymph node and as referred me to the Breast Clinic, she said because of it's shaped she ruled out the swollen lymph node. It's quite big around 2cm and I am unable to get my fingers behind it, it doesn't hurt and is not tender when touched and when I press down on it you can still feel it.
I know people won't be able to advise me on what it could but I am a little anxious with the GP ruling the swollen lymph node out. The lump is painless, no redness or inflammation present at all. Could anyone advise me on what to expect at the first appointment at the breast clinic please? And does this sound like the big 'C'?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Perdie85

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently found a breast lump. You've done exactly the right thing in seeing your GP and it's good to hear that they have referred you to the local breast clinic.

We know that waiting for appointments can be a difficult time and it's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things. You might find it helpful to have a look at this article on the Breast Cancer Now website about what to expect at a breast clinic appointment. I'd also say it's really important to keep in mind that the vast majority of women seen in a breast clinic do not go on to be diagnosed with cancer so try to stay positive.

It can often help to talk things through with someone and if you'd like to chat with one of our nurses for some information and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I hope you don't have to wait too long for your appointment. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

So sorry I haven't replied until now, hectic work life and family over the past few weeks.
Thank you for your kind words.
I have received an appointment for the breast clinic on 3rd Feb. I am getting pretty nervous now and constantly feeling the lump, I think it has grown ever so slightly since I first notice it. I am unable to feel any other lumps but my breasts do feel a bit lumpy. I did notice the other day though that my left breast looked somewhat wonky (out of shape) and I keep comparing the one to the other, it has since gone back to normal but now my armpit as become itchy, I do put this down to constantly touching the lump, and have refrained from touching it over the past couple of days, so I think I must have irritated it a little maybe?! The lump is still not painful and the lump isn't itchy, but the skin in front and around it, I mean. My left armpit does look a bit swollen compared to the other. I did weigh myself the other day too and have lost 1/2 stone since the beginning of October.
What happens at the breast clinic? I know the they may do ultrasound, mammogram and biopsy's etc, but do they or can they tell from these checks whether it is a cyst or something more sinister and would they tell me this appointment what it is?

    Thank you in advance.

  • Hi there,

Just wondering how it went at the breast clinic

  • Hi,

I went to the Breast clinic on Thursday and had an ultrasound scan which confirmed a 11mm sebaceous cyst. They are not doing anything about it and informed me it will either go away on it's own, stay there forever or if it gets infected I would need to see GP for it possibly draining.
I'm so thankful it is nothing sinister as I was driving myself up the wall thinking about it
Thank you so much for asking. Keeping everything crossed and praying all the other lovely ladies have positive results too.
