Armpit lump - waiting for an appointment

Hello everyone

I feel very selfish dumping all my worries here on a Saturday night, sorry

On December 15th I went to my GP with a left side armpit lump - she immediately said it needed a biopsy and referred me to our 2 ww/Fast track breast clinic. My family have a big history of breast cancer. I told her I'd had a clear mammogram in September 2021 and she said that wasn't much use as the mammogram doesnt go into your armpit

I am still waiting for my appointment - Christmas and so many poor NHS staff off with covid makes everything more difficult I know. Yesterday and today I have started to experience some pain radiating out of the armpit and also in my shoulder blade which is freaking me out completely!  Someone needs to disconnect the wifi to make me stop googling NOW!

Do I'm just wondering if anyone has had experience of an armpit lump, whether it's always cancer and whether the doctor knew it was bad when she said I needed a biopsy?  Sorry to be so selfish with all my questions. I have noticed an inverted nipple on the same side but it isn't inverted all the time, only occasionally - I'm hoping it wouldn't 'pop in and out' (sorry for so much detail!) if a mass was pulling it in? I hope you are all staying safe and well and thank you for reading this far

I daren't keep looking at it/feeling it

  • Oh thank you so much sharing. You must have been so relieved xx

  • How are you today? let me know

I have my appointment in 4 hours - I am very scared this morning because I have started to get soreness/discomfort around my arm and shoulder pain on the side of the armpit lump

    I need to stop thinking!

  • Hello Susie I am thinking of you I hope everything goes ok.
I have my appointment next Wednesday. Another week of worry but I will manage I am sure.

    Best wishes,

    Katie x

  • Dear Katie

Just back from the hospital - I got the all clear! I feel so very lucky.

The consultant said it was a swollen lymph node - he asked about my covid booster as appparently lots of women are getting swollen lymph nodes after their booster vacc.

I had an ultrasound which showed it was nothing nasty so I am home now. I am hoping your appointment will be as comfortable as mine. The staff are all so kind and super efficient

He said the pain around my armpit was nothing to do with the lump - maybe a workout I've overdone? My family history is awful for breast cancer and I'm post-menopausal so I honestly went expecting the worst. Love to everyone xx

  • This is such good news.
So happy for you, now you can relax. :-)

I will let you know how I get on next week for sure.

    Take care

    Katie xx

  • Dear Katie

I'm not very good at tracking these posts - I think your appointment was yesterday? how did you get on, will you let me know? xx

  • Hey Susie.

I am so sorry I was meaning to message but just got side tracked. So all good news, I was so relieved!! Honestly I have been thinking the absolute worse, I have not eaten very well last week, the thought of leaving my boys just broke my heart. But all good, the nurse I saw said the nipple situation is probably after having my babies as it did start after my first child. The pain in my shoulder as pretty much gone but appears to be muscle related. And the lump, I had an ultrasound and it looks to be a cyst that's slightly got infected. It has reduced in size but will go to my GP if it doesn't go by next week as may need some antibiotics. Honestly I am so happy and blessed. And I'm glad you are ok too.

Thanks so much for the messages and for asking how I was.

    Take care and best wishes

    Katie xxxxx
