Inflammatory Breast Cancer?

Hi everyone, to clarify I haven't been diagnosed with IBC, but I'm worried I may have it.

For a good few months I've had a couple of lumps just under my right breast, when pushed they would leak/squirt pus, sometimes different colours from green, orange, red, pure blood etc. From what I could see there was something in my breast (potentially a vein?) that was feeding this lump, as when I would push down on this slightly raised part of skin the pus would immediately come out of the lump as opposed to when I would squeeze the lump itself. I knew I should go to the doctors to get it checked out, but I was embarrassed and have anxiety to avoid going to the doctors unless it's something serious. A couple of weeks ago the hole where the pus would come out from closed up, when I would squeeze the lump now I could see what looked like a build up of yellow pus under my skin, however this could just be yellowish bruising where I was messing with it too much so I didn't think too much of it, all I knew was I was no longer able to squeeze the pus out of this lump.

Fast forward to yesterday evening, I felt fine all day but started to feel shivery and cold, I put it down to it being winter as my house is always pretty cold, but soon I was shaking violently and the air felt like ice, I got under my duvet completely so I wasn't exposed to the air but I was still cold, I wasn't able to warm up and that was when I knew something was wrong, because usually when I'm cold and put my head under the duvet I can't keep it under for more than a minute or so because of how stuffy it gets, but now all I felt was cold. I got up to go and get a drink of water and had to sit back down as I was shivering so much I nearly fell down, I felt seriously weak. I stayed under my duvet and began to warm up, my shivering slowed but when I'd poke my head out and the air hit my Face I'd start shivering again. After about half an hour when I was warmed up I got out from under my duvet, my face forehead and chest were burning and my right armpit/arm were aching. Of course the first thing that came to mind was that I had covid, but as I started to feel better and I  actually became too warm, I could smell and taste so I ruled that out and just assumed I had a funny turn, my fever calmed down and I went to sleep.

This morning I woke up and noticed my right breast felt sore, I had a look at it and noticed a red rash had spread around my nipple, and it was sore to the touch. The skin is dimpled like an orange peel. I googled my symptoms and came across IBC, I began wondering if my fever and chills last night were due to this. My armpit aching, it all started to worry me. I'm going to call the doctors first thing tomorrow but I've looked into it and now I'm scared that it may be too far along to treat effectively. I'm 21 and overweight, 2 things that I read can increase your chances of getting it. I know it's early days and I haven't been diagnosed, but I keep thinking of my family and all the things I haven't done yet, the things I had planned - I'm due to move into my own flat in the next couple of months and was so excited to begin my life properly. My mum passed away from cancer nearly 4 years ago, it began as lung cancer but progressed to her brain, so I'm not sure if maybe cancer in the family is a concern. I just wanted some advice and opinions, I'm sorry for how long this was and if it seems like I'm jumping the gun. Kind regards x

  • Hello Wherearetheavocados

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you've been having with your breast recently.

I hope that you were able to speak with your GP this morning. If you've not been able to contact them then please do call them tomorrow. If you start to feel unwell like you've described previously (shivering with a fever) then do call NHS 111 for advice.

There could be many causes for the problem that you've described, some of which can be very easily treated,  but the important thing now is to see a GP. You've had this problem for a few months which hasn't been resolved so do give them a call and hopefully they will be able to get things resolved for you quickly.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn, thank you for your reply. I rang the doctors this morning, the receptionist had a doctor call me. She rang me and I explained my symptoms, she asked me to come in in the next few hours so she could have a look. I went and had it looked at, she said it seemed benign and that it wasn't likely to be cancer due to my age. I explained that apparently this type of cancer (Inflammatory breast cancer) tends to affect women my age, however she brushed this off. I felt that she was ruling out it being cancer just because of my age, so I'm still quite worried. She gave me a steroid cream and said to come back in two weeks if not better. I've decided to book another appointment next week with my usual doctor to get a second opinion :)

  • Hello

I'm glad to hear that you've been able to see a GP today and that they didn't have any immediate cause for concern. Hopefully the steroid that they've given you will help with things over the coming week but do make a follow-up appointment to make sure that things are settling.

Hopefully, your usual GP will be able to give you some further reassurance but I'd also suggest you avoid searching Google for answers. Unfortunately, you rarely get an accurate answer and more often than not people are left feeling more anxious and worried about their symptoms.

I hope things settle for you soon.

     Best wishes,
