Breast lump/ 2 week wait (England)

Hi guys!

I need some advice regarding breast screening and imaging please!

I am a 22 year old female.

I recently went to my GP regarding a lump under the skin under the nipple, making my nipple and bottom half of my areola quite hard.
I have been having pain there the past 6 months but only thought to check it a week ago.
I have a small circular red patch under my nipple not correlating to the shape and size of my lump. The lump cannot be seen by eye it has to be felt.
My GP did say it could be scar tissue because of my piercings but I don't have it on the other nipple, also it shouldn't be causing the pain I am in.
my arm often goes numb-ish, fuzzy and heavy on the same side as the breast with the lump. I have no nipple discharge even when I took the piercing out, the other side with no lumps bled and had a bit of pus but the side with the lump had nothing. I've been sleeping more than usual and small things are making me tired. My nipple area sometimes becomes wrinkly regardless of temperature too.

I do have a family history of cancer/ leukaemia  so my GP had no choice but to refer me.

my two questions are:

1. What will I be expecting at the breast clinic regarding my symptoms.
2. has anybody else had similar symptoms and what was the outcome?

lots of love

  • Hi Kel,

I am going through the same experience at the moment. In October of 2020 I found some lumps in my neck that have been growing ever since, however due to delays and covid I'm still waiting for more scans and a biopsy. I then found a lump in my breast on NYE which made me panic even more given my situation. I have a family history of Luekemia, so my gut feeling was that my neck was the first symptom of that, so the breast lump was definitely a shock to the system. I managed to contact urgent care as my GP was closed over the holidays, and have been referred to the breast clinic with the same 2 week wait.

I have breast implants so I was also told that my lump could be related to scar tissue, however it has just popped out of nowhere as I had my surgery over 2 years ago now. Because of my age (I'm 20) lots of my issues have been dismissed but my gut feeling is that something isn't right.

I don't really know what to expect either, however I now know that with something like this that is extremely stressful and scary you really have to push for the tests that you want. If you are still worried after tests please push for more tests until you get a solid answer. If I had pushed to get this sorted out over a year ago I wouldn't have had to go through months of stress and anxiety, it's going to be relief to hear anything they have to say to me.

Let us know how you get on and I'll update you too. If you ever need a chat I'm here for you.

  • Hi Kel,

Sorry to meet you on here and I hope you're ok?

I'm writing to respond to your questions

    1) The breast clinic are usually really good and helpful you will be seen by a doctor who will look a both breasts. They may also feel them for lumps. They will discuss what they are thinking and may send you for a mammogram and/or ultrasound. They will explain it all to you all to you and it's usually all done on the same day.

The mammogram can be uncomfortable but it's soon over.

The ultrasound is pain free just a probe with jelly on it .

The doctors are there to explain all thats required.

If any of the tests show some thing suspicious, then the doctor may ask for biopsy/s to be done.

    2) Your symptoms need checking and hopefully may be due to infection. Only 1 to 2 referrals to breast clinic end up with a cancer diagnosis

Did your doctor refer you on "fast track" if so you should be seen within 2 weeks. I hope you have an early appointment the waiting is nerve racking and no one likes waiting. Hopefully you will be  seen shortly. Try to be busy with friends or family as much as you can within the limits of Covid of course

Please let us know how you get on.

Sending a big hug Lilyanne xx

  • Hiya, I have just received my appointment and it is tomorrow (11th) and yes I was fast tracked... it's hard as I live away from home at the moment in a mental health unit. So now I don't have much waiting I'm going to try and sleep it away! My nipple shape is becoming quite distorted so I'm glad I'm being seen now! Thank you for your advice! Take care xxxxx

  • Hi Charlie, I have just received and appointment date for tomorrow (11th) so no more waiting! I was fast tracked on the 2 week wait, thankfully I can get it over and done with now! I hope you're ok, sending all my love xxxx

  • That's great news, I'm so glad it's come through quickly for you as it's such an anxious time.

Good luck for tomorrow, I'll be thinking of you.

Please let me know how you get on
