Colonoscopy tomorrow, advice

Hi everyone, I have a colonoscopy tomorrow which I've never had before. I'm super anxious about this procedure, I've read a lot of stories about how painful it can be. I'm also scared of needles but I need sedation so I have to have a cannula either way.

I was just wondering, does anyone have any positive experiences they would share with me? All I hear about is negative and I really need to calm my nerves right now. I'm a 22 year old male if that changes anything.

Thanks everyone!

  • My experience was mostly positive. Worst part was the constant going to the toilet as my bottom hurt from wiping. And the prep didn't taste great. I don't remember feeling anything at all beyond a bit of gas during the procedure though and wasn't even tired afterwards. Then they told me everything was fine, so all pretty good really. I mean, it wasn't exactly fun, between the prep and the worry about them finding something unexpected, but it wasn't a particularly big deal either and there was no pain.

  • hi - i had my first colonoscopy experience on 7th December ( 35F ) and when i tell you i was in a state, thats an understatement. i was having panic attacks thinking about it.

The actual procedure ( for me ) was obviously a bit embarassing, and slightly uncomfy, however i found the prep 10 times worse than the actual procedure. To be blunt, I'd go through 3 procedures before 1 night of prep personally

The nurses were great, i was sedated, but awake and alert, at no point did i need to ask them to stop, or take the gas and air on offer. It absolutely was not as bad as i expected, and i hope your experience is the same

  • Thanks for the reassurance, hearing positive stories really does help settle my nerves a little. I can cope with a little bit of pain, I've sat through a tattoo for a couple of hours without flinching and that weren't bad to me. But I also know that people handle different types of pain differently. I'm just worried I may move or flinch in pain and damage my insides. Thanks again.

  • Hearing positive stories like yours does help, I'm happy yours went smoothly. I just find it hard to imagine how I would react if I did find it painful, I wouldn't want to move and possibly damage my insides. And if there is pain I just hope I can push myself through it because I really don't want to abort the procedure. Thank you.

  • i can hand on heart say i felt 0 pain. Literally 0. i had a 15mm polyp removed, and the stalk tattooed, and felt 0 pain. and this is from the person who faints getting bloods done.

  • That really is assuring since I've also fainted having a blood test before. I hope it goes as smoothly as yours, thanks for everything:)

  • Hi, it all went smoothly. There were about 3 times where I did feel pain but it's was very short lived and nothing I couldn't handle. The doctor said my colon looks normal, he took a few biopsies but according to him there's nothing to worry about. Thanks for your advice it really settles my nerves. I hope you're well and staying safe!
