Hard Lump underneath both ribs cages

Just wondered if anyone else has had these symptoms

So just over 4 years ago I went to the hospital due to having on and off diarrhea/constipation, muscas in stool and very frequent bowel pain and discomfort over the period of a year. I also lost around 2 stone without any explanation as my diet had not changed.

After having a colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy, they told me they think it's hemorrhoids so they gave me tablets to take.

The tablet did not work but after a few months the symtoms faded away.

A year late (3 years ago) I noticed a small lump probably the size of a pea just underneath my left rib cage. I had a look on Google and assumed it's just a fatty lump.

Since then my bowel movements have constantly changed from constipation to loose stools. Never any blood.

As time goes by I am feeling more and more discomfort in my abdominal area and some nights I'm very close to throwing up. The lump is very slowly getting bigger and bigger to the point where its around 3" (only what I can feel)

I know It's below the abdominal muscle because when I tense I can barely it.

If I completely lay down I can barely feel it but if I lay at around 30 degrees and turn my stomach to the left slightly I can poke it and actually go underneath the lump which feels like a very hard sort of roll. Not soft at all.

The lump itself does not hurt to touch. Only the surrounding area is tender. My ribs are also tender when I wake up.

My bowel movements in the last 6 months have been getting slower and slower to the point where I have to sit on the toilet for 30 minutes before anything happens. My stools are getting thinner and thinner to the point where it is now as thin as a pencil.

This caused me to finally do something about it and apply for a new GP (I had recently moved 70 miles away)

About 2 months ago I went to the GP and explained my symptoms. He felt the lump and said it could be my rib cage. I told him it is 100% not my rib cage as its been getting bigger and bigger and its causing me a lot of discomfort around the rest of by bowels. He then asked me if I had any family history with bowel problems and I said yes. My aunt has celiac disease and 3 of my Nans brothers died at a very young age from Bowel Cancer. He smirked and said "you're too young to have that".

He booked me in for a blood test and chest x ray. Chest x ray came back all normal but the blood test showed I had very low vitamin D levels. I was prescribed with 50,000 IU Vitamin D tablets to take once a week for 9 weeks. I have since finished the tablets and I feel no better.

I decided to just carry on with life and see if things magically get better. But every single day I have quite a lot of mucas in my stool.

About 3 weeks ago I noticed another lump but this time it was under my right ribcage. About the size of a pea. I'm feeling more and more tired to the point where I can barely get out of bed.

Today was the first time I've noticed streaks of bright red blood in my stools along with mucas. I am now very concerned at this point and I feel like my GP won't be of any help.

Edit:

The lump on the left side is just below the 10th rib where the transverse Colon would be. Is it possible to feel the colon without any pain?

  • Hello Danielcurious and welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing these health issues and that you found another lump three weeks ago. That combined with the extreme tiredness you are feeling and the mucus and blood in your stool would be a good reason to perhaps seek a second opinion especially if you feel that your current GP won't be as helpful as you'd hope. You can find out more about getting a second opinion on this page.

I hope that you manage to talk to someone about this soon and you get the reassurance you need.

    Best wishes,
