Brown discharge post menopausal

Hello.

I'm feeling rather worried and just wanted to ask opinions on here.

I'm 68 years old and had a brown vaginal discharge last September on just one occasion. I tied to just pass it off at the time as it was only briefly on one afternoon and after I'd had a flare up of my ibs.
As my husband has prostate cancer I've tried not to dwell on this symptom of mine.....possibly thinking it was something like vaginal atrophy.
This last week though I've felt increasingly unwell and tired and really bad bloating and stomach discomfort which again I've attributed to my ibs.

Yesterday afternoon as I stood up I was aware that I'd has some sort of discharge and on investigation saw a discharge rather like the tail end of a period.

I think this time I must ring the dr? This will obviously have to be tomorrow with it being bank holiday.

Am I being alarmist here?

could vaginal atrophy cause this do you think?

Sorry for all the questions but I've no one else to share with. Many thanks.

  • Hello Jenny5!

No you are not being alarmist. The best reassurance is to contact the Dr. Any discharge is best seen to if at all possible. I do hope you will be reassured soonest. It will be worrying for you with your hasband having prostate cancer. My husband has been though that too, but is fine now. he is now in his mid 80s.

I now have a type of blood cancer, and have been very grateful for the help on a similar site. With Covid there are not so many opportunities for a coffee and a chat in person! Look after yourself, and i hope this turns out to be a good year for you and your husband.

  • Hi Jenny5

I don’t think you’re being alarmist, but I do think you need to get checked out. It may be something simple to resolve-hopefully it is-but it’s always best to check. In my personal experience, doctors are very on the ball with any unusual post menopausal bleeding/discharge. My best friend experienced something similar and was diagnosed with vaginal atrophy, but hopefully you can get an appointment to put your mind at rest. Do let us know how you get on, as there is always plenty of support here-which is very helpful when you don’t have anyone to share your worries with. I hope you can be checked out and have your mind put at rest. x

  • Hi, I’m 57 and in menapause 5/6 years, I had discharge one month then the next month I had small bleed, asi had been suffering a lot with bloating gas and constipation I thought was a stomach problem causing this, so was shocked to be told endometrial cancer, I’m not saying this is what u have but is definitely worth a doc appointment,my oncologist said anything past menopause is worth a visit to be checked. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, but is def worth a word with ur gp x

  • Hi. Thanks for your reply too.
I've now got an ultrasound scan this Saturday, so not a long wait fortunately.
May I just ask was your discharge over a few days or an isolated event? Mine literally has just been on two occasions.

  • Isolated, had discharge Dec. A bleed in January, only a few spots that’s it.
