Lump discovered, referral to hospital breast clinic and scar

Hi,

I discovered a lump on my breast and saw the doctor today. They are doing a quick referral for it to be checked out by the breast clinic at the hospital.

Feeling pretty anxious about it all as I'm only 28 with no children. I know it's probably going to be nothing, but so hard not to worry about it.

Any tips to stay calm?

Thank you

  • Ah thank you so much for explaining. This helps a lot! they are obviously just on top of things ay!

that call sounds exactly the same as my voicemail.

my DR said she doesn't think it's anything to worry about... can doctors lie about that? Xx

    Hi Amyhtxx93,

I think that it is most unlikely that your GP would lie to you. They tend to tell things as they are where cancer is suspected. It is normal for us to get an appointment through quickly, as all people should be seen within two weeks from the date of referral. I hope that your appointment comes through quickly, as this is always a worrying wait.

I am not a doctor, but I have noticed that many breast thickening symptoms turn out to be benign fibrous changes, so here's hoping that this will be so in your case.

Please try not to panic and keep reminding yourself that "it isn't cancer until you're told that it's cancer." Only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic gets a cancer diagnosis. Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

thank you so much for replying, and your calming words I'm an absolute bag of nerves at the moment, and it's consuming me completely!

    xx

  • That's the same as me. my lump is on my left breast (upper outter of my left breast) and my underarm is also swollen. But that's what I presented with to my GP.

I phoned my hospital as I knew which hospital I was going to and they told me my appointment over the phone before I got the letter... from going to the GP to going to the clinic is 4 weeks.  There is already a back log due to covid in my area but due to Christmas and new year there is an extra week.

you could phone your drs again. When I presented to the gp, I actually seen a nurse practitioner and she said I could phone and speak to her anytime, even just to chat if I felt overwhelmed. So if you feel your symptoms are worse, it wouldn't harm phoning. Alicia x

    Hi Amyhtxx,

It's the unknown that is so hard to deal with. You will feel better once you know what you are dealing with, irrespective of the outcome. Not all breast changes are cancerous. Many are benign cysts, fibrous or hormonal changes. It is a fact that only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis. Breast cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer nowadays.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 12 years, yet I still live a busy and fulfilled life.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
