Subungual melanoma referral

Had a black mark in the bottom corner but of my big toenail. First noticed it about a month ago and it's been spreading upwards (but not across) the nail. Assumed it was bruise or just part of the fungal nail infection I've had in that toe. Went to podiatrist 5 days ago to make sure it was okay and she said it looked like a hematoma to her but to keep a watch to make sure fresh nail grows underneath. Felt reassured but sent a photo to my GP to be on the safe side. Got a phone call the next day to say he was referring me to a dermatologist as it might be a melanoma as it looked "a bit irregular". After my initial panic I calmed down somewhat and had another look to see if I could see under the cuticle any fresh nail but all I did was make it bleed from the surface of the nail near the cuticle which only made me panic again as the doctor had said to look out for any bleeding. If anyone has any experience with this and can offer any reassurance it would be much appreciated.

  • Hello MasterM

I'm sorry to hear that you're waiting on a referral to the dermatologist at the moment. We know that for many people waiting can be a particularly difficult time and it's natural to feel anxious about things. Hopefully, you will have some news in the new year with an appointment date and the Consultant will be able to give you some answers and reassurance.

Our nurse helpline is now closed for Christmas, but they will be back in the office on Wednesday 29th December and are available 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040 if you'd like to chat things through with them. I'm sure they will be able to offer some advice and support.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
