Still waiting for diagnosis

My 16yo found a lump on side of neck early this year. Bloods came back fine but when lump didn't go, they were referred for ultrasound which was denied by hospital stating it didn't meet criteria. Went back to Dr, who then referred to ENT. they had 1st FNA biopsy (End August). This didn't provide enough sample to give clear picture, but showed abnormal cells. 2nd biopsy was undertaken, then they were told it was malignant and thyroid cancer suspected.3rd biopsy on thyroid and lymph node was undertaken 3 weeks ago and MDT meeting held Tuesday where case was discussed. I phoned today but consultant was at another hospital, so no news. In last week or so my 16 yo has started struggling to swallow.we don't have a definitive diagnosis yet and the waiting is horrific. This has been a whole term of waiting ... I can't bear going into Xmas not knowing. We all want to know a diagnosis. Surely this length of time and wait is not right for someone of this age? Has anyone else taken so long for diagnosis?

    Hi Tegdif,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to read your story. It is uncommon for young people to develop cancer, which has possibly caused some of the delay in getting a diagnosis for your son. The fact that he has needed additional tests may have also delayed things slightly, but it shouldn't have taken a year to get an answer.

Did you ask when the consultant would be back when you phoned? If not, it might be woth phoning his secretary to ask when he is likely to be back and when you are likely to get the results.

I do hope that you get an answer soon. Please keep in touch and let us know how he gets on.

I hope that you all manage to have a Happy Christmas, despite having this hanging over your heads,

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hey Tegdif,

Sorry to hear about you son.

I'm a 23 year old female. 4 months ago, I noticed my one boob was covered in a bruise and what looked like blood spots until the skin for no reason. Called the doctor. Was sent to a nurse for an examination and told I must have injured it. However I was even on holiday. No way I did.

2 weeks later that cleared and I found a lump in the same boob. Called the doctor, was sent for an examination with the same nurse. Was told "I'm young and healthy, it can't be anything serious.  Probablyjust hormones". Asked for a second appointment and thar time the doctor said "nurse must have been right" but booked a check up for 3 weeks later. It was still then, was told its thickened tissue..

4 months later, still no tests or changes.  Its really concerning me
