Is this just in Lancashire?

My other half was seen by the GP over 2 weeks ago for a raised mole type lesion on his head.   The GO said he would be reffered to dermatology and seen within 2 weeks.  As we are over 2 weeks now he range the GP surgery yesterday who gave him a telephone number to ring.   He did and was told it had been passed to a hospital in Chorley so ring them.  He did and was told oh it is not us ring these people, so he did.  Finally a lady said oh yes but one of the consultants had retired so it is likely to be mid January at the very earliest, sorry!   We rang the GP Surgery back and they said oh yes there is a long wait at present.  So we asked about referral outside area.  GP rang back this morning and said that they are not allowed to refer patients outside Lancashire for the cancer suspected 2 week rule.  Is that true? I am not trying to jump the queue but my sister has just been seen within the 2 weeks at a hospital in Wigan. Maybe there is not such a backlog over there.

  • Hi,

Firstly I'd like to say I'm sorry for the worry your going through right now, I understand how stressful it is to be left waiting longer than you were originally told.

My experience. Novemember last year, found a breast lump, saw locum at my gp surgery who agreed she felt a lump and sent a urgent refferal to breast clinic told me I would be contacted within 2 weeks and would have an appoint within the 4 weeks from refferal.  I rang back and forth a few times nobody could tell me much, other than breast clinic said my refferal never went through as urgent gp surgery said it did. Anyway, ended up going private in the December and eventually got a call from the breast clinic in the early April asking if I still required an appointment.

Thankfully I didn't as it would of been torture going months with no appt.

I'm in Wales. We do have a slightly different waiting procedure to England.

I should also add that some departments triage appointments, so a consultant looks at the refferal first and decides where on the list the person needs to go.

Good luck, wishing your partner all the best.
