concern about fibroadenoma diagnosis

hi i'm an 18 year old girl and about a month ago i went to the breast clinic for an ultrasound because i was experiencing breast pain, swelling and my right nipple was more inverted than usual. The doctor didn't seem at all concerned. I was just given a leaflet about fibroadenoma and she didn't explain what it was.

I realise now that the breast pain was awful before possibly because I was sleeping on my right side and I was doing arm exercises. However, now that the pain isn't very bad, sometimes it is still there. What I'm concerned about is that my right nipple has become even more inverted. It is way more sunken in and it takes ages to come out. When it does come out (rarely) it isn't the same as my left nipple and it very quickly goes back in again. Does this happen with cancer?

I've been worried for months now that this could be cancer even though my doctor didn't seem worried that it was. I felt like I was overlooked because I'm only 18 and I don't have any family history of breast cancer.

So, is this increased nipple inversion a cause for concern? Could a fibroadenoma cause this to happen?

  • Hello eve566 and welcome to our forum.

Hopefully others who can relate to your experience will pop by shortly to chat with you and offer advice.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that although we can't tell you if your nipple inversion is a cause for concern while reading on the forum, I found this thread with a reply from our nurse Wanda which you might find helpful to read.

And lastly, if you feel like speaking with someone with a medical background, our team of nurses will be happy to chat with you. They are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this freephone 0808 800 4040 Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.
