Linchen schlerosis

I am very worried after a diagnosis, is it more common to be cancer or pre cancer if this is on the vulva but mainly around the cliterol hood. I'm awaiting being seen by the specialist.

Thanks

  • Hello 1988

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis of lichen sclerosis and that you're feeling very anxious at the moment. It's understandable that you're worried but good to know you have a referral to a specialist. Hopefully, you won't be waiting too long to see them.

There's some information on the NHS website about lichen sclerosis which you may find helpful. Although the condition can be associated with vulval cancer the NHS website says that "It's estimated that less than 5% of women who develop one of these conditions will go on to develop vulval cancer". Try to stay positive and hopefully the specialist will be able to give you some reassurance about your particular situation.

We know that waiting for appointments and tests can be a difficult time. If you think it may help to chat through your concerns with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm (excluding bank holidays).

I hope that things settle for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Thankyou for your response, I think I'm just anxious because I am only 34 and it is more common in older women and my gp said it is already chronic. Waiting is the hard part.
