Absolutely terrified for husband following abnormal fit test

Hi all,

i am really looking for some reassurance. My husband was diagnosed with an internal pile about 6 weeks ago. He was prescribed suppositories which have helped. He then had a bit of an off tummy for a couple of weeks which again has completely cleared up. He spoke to the dr who wasn't concerned but offered to do bloods and stool sample.

well the bloods came back ok (everso slightly raised ALT) but his stool sample has come back abnormal with a value of 398!

I suffer from really bad health anxiety and I cannot find anything on the internet regarding levels as such, just that anything over 10 is classed as positive. I am sooooo scared right now.

He has a drs apt on Monday which I am guessing he will be referred for a colonoscopy.

Please please someone give me some positive news. I am going out of my mind

  • I can well imagine how worried you must be. As you probably know, the FIT test is a test for blood in the stool, not a test for cancer. While cancer can cause blood in the stool, so can many other things, including piles. I believe the test is pretty sensitive, so if he were seeing any visible blood at all, you would expect it to be positive. I think about 10% of positive FIT tests are cancer, which means that 90% are not. It is quite likely he will be referred for a colonoscopy, which should find out what is wrong.

  • Thank you so much for responding. I suffer from bad health anxiety so this causes me to go off the scale.

I know googling is absolutely the wrong thing to do but I can't help myself sometimes. I just can't find anything about levels and if it's higher is it more serious?

  • Hi, did you get the results of the colonoscopy yet?

My husband is going through the same situation. Daily bleeding, quite large amounts, only after a bowel motion.

Bloods came back today as totally normal and the stool taken to test for inflammation came back fine. The FIT test has come back as abnormal but no levels were given.

He would have had bleeding at the time the FIT test was done, the other stool sample had blood on the outside of it so I am 100% sure they both would have.

I am going out of my mind with worry now. He is expecting a call from the hospital next week for next steps, but the uncertainly is very difficult to deal with.

I am still hoping that it is an internal hemmeroid or something less sinister than cancer but it is hard not to focus on the terrible possibilities. I don't know if the FIT test picks up specific markers or will be abnormal is any blood is present.

  • Hi,

Yes so he had his colonoscopy last Sunday. He had 9 polyps removed which I believe is quite a lot. They did say they weren't concerned about them but send to histology as routine. It's likely he will be seen every 3 years or so now dependant on the results of the histology.

he seems so much more relaxed! Me on the other hand, well I'm still incredibly anxious.

Fingers crossed your not waiting too long. I totally know how you feel. X x

  • Thank you for replying. I am glad they discovered what the problem was and that he is more relaxed about the whole situation. I have read that they can tell if what they remove is an issue, so the fact they said they were not concerned is a very positive thing.

I have spent all day reading web pages about positive FIT tests and my anxiety is out of control. I feel sick just thinking about possible outcomes and it is taking quite a toll on my mental health. We have three young children and I am finding it hard to be engaged and relaxed around them with this hanging over our heads.

I am holding onto the hope that while we have had a positive FIT test, there could still be other reasons for the bleeding like an internal hemmeroid or a polyp being irritated.
